Hi Guys:

We've unloaded our Smoker Craft Pro Angler 182xl, and now have only a sweet little (12') craft that is a wicked Meat Hunter in it's own right.

Recently stuck an electric start 10 hp motor on it, AND... if memory serves us right, you NEED to register this boat becuz of the "Electric Start" thingy. Is that right? Or can we just go FISH?

Oh yeah, one more thing: two, actually. 1) We're 77 yrs old, and 2) Having serious Health issues. So if some of our stuff shows up lookin' a tad grizzly, givvus a little slack, okay?

So... assuming we're right and need to register, where the heck do we do THAT?

The electric start has nothing to do with you boats need to be registered. You need to register you boat because it has a motor greater than 9.9. Registration as you are probably aware is free of charge. It will however cost you 20-30 dollars for custom registration numbers from a shop like Trimline.

The link from Fry Flier is where you want to go to license the boat, make sure you provide all the information they request. I've tried 3 times and never did get it done. We license our small craft and register our larger boats to make them available to the gov. should they need them, as in Dunkirk.

Licensing and registering are two different documents.

Polliwog is correct, registering is for larger vessels that the Govt. may need to appropriate in the case of a National emergency. There are other reasons for registering a boat as well, but no need to go into that here.

Licensing is for most smaller vessels, mainly used for personal use and for vessels powered by motors 10 HP and larger.

The question to Wordpecker is this; this new motor is it a 9.9hp or 10hp? It should have a decal on the cowl as well as stated in the ownership/operators manual.

Heheheh... and therein lies the NEXT problem.

The motor lies at the back end of the garage, with nine thousand unmovable objects directly in front of it. We've sent a quickie to J&P marine asking if they know, and should have the answer in the morning.

please guys stop the confusing the guy. Bud it is no big deal first you most probably dont have a 10 hp outboard it will be a 9.8 thats why they call them a 9.8 its a 10 second you can put the numbers on with a magic marker if in fact it was a 10 hp. but I really doubt it. email me and i will steer you in the league cheapest way. Go have fun fishing

I don't think there was any confusion with my reply.

Regulations state anything 10hp or greater needs a license. This is why most motors the same size are advertised and sold as 9.9's.

doesn't matter what HP the motor is you can still license the boat. My 12' tin moves right along with a 6hp by myself but it's rated for a 25hp. I wanted to license it in case I ever decided to try something bigger.

Why do I need a pleasure craft licence?
A valid pleasure craft licence helps law enforcement and search and rescue workers identify pleasure craft in emergency situations. By law, any pleasure craft, including a personal watercraft, that is powered by one or more motors adding up to 10 hp (7.5 kW) or more must have a valid licence. You must display the licence number on both sides of the bow of your boat in block characters that are at least 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) high, and in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow.

i had a Honda similar to the one in your picture. Mine was a 5 HP on a 12 ft boat.
Because it said 50 on the side of the engine, people would say “That boat must fly with a 50 on it.”
