I live on the shore of Lake Ontario near Amherstview, west of Collins Bay so I get to observe water clarity on a daily basis. The last couple of weeks of August had the cloudiest water that I've seen since the zebra mussels moved in decades ago. The water had a chalky grey green tinge and you couldn't see bottom in 4 feet of water. There was a big blow on September 2nd and the water went back to near crystal clear again, you could see bottom clearly at least 8 feet down. I'm guessing that the really warm water this summer gave rise to an algae bloom that the mussels couldn't keep up with. Cooling weather and a lot of mixing by the wind storm waves dropped surface water temperatures pretty quick. Haven't been fishing lately, but I'm thinking the fish can spot lures from further away than it August.

The chalky colour is usually associated with what is called a "whiting event".
