Going to upgrade my sonar/gps to a Helix 9 GPS MEGA Side Imaging for the spring and have to decide whether to spend $1200ish on a used G2N or G3N, or put out $2100+ for a new G4N.

For any owners out there, how much better is the G3 than the G2? Or the new G4? I want superior imaging, but don't want to spend an extra $1000+ for a minor upgrade.

Looks like someone’s been watching a lot of Tom Boley YouTube videos! He convinced me to upgrade to a side imaging unit as well. I ended up getting a new 10” G2N. It’s everything I hoped it would be. Huge screen, easy to use, easy to understand and great picture resolution.

Side imaging is not nearly as easy as I thought it would be. It will take a few seasons for me to really know how to take full advantage of this tool. If you do watch Tom, he makes it look easy.....

Unfortunately I can’t compare the 2,3 and now the 4. I’m sure there are forums elsewhere that you could find that info.... from what I read, I think you’ve nailed it on the head...1000 extra bucks for a minor upgrade. Good luck fella.

We made a switch this year to a G3 mega side. We had the G1. And man. Huge difference. It has taken me a couple years to read side imagining. And no I will say I still don’t completely read it correctly. But the mega down imaging. And it is seconded to none. Amazing clarity. You will not be disappointed going with the G3 in my opinion.

Jamie,

I’m also a big fan of Tom Boley. I have a couple Helix 9 Gen 3’s on my boat. I have been using them for two years now. Depending on the depth and bottom conditions I see fish no problem. Of course I don't see as many fish as Tom Boley. There doesn't appear that there are any significant technology jump from a Gen 3 to a Gen 4. Unless you want the new 15” Gen 4 screen. For a billion dollars. You would be happy with the Gen 3. I can show you how I set mine up.

Gen 3 or 4. Because they are compatible with the new live transducer, expected to be comparable to garmin live scope.
