Ontario Announces New Enhancements to Carp Fishing

Some of you have seen this already it was announced last week. 3 lines per person while carp fishing from shore, but each line can only be 2 metres from another line you have out. Interesting to me is it said artifical corn?? Why?

Love to help you out Dan, but we've never even heard of 'Artificial Corn'.

If guessing, first assumption would be it was something along the lines of Canned Laughter?

I was thinking of getting into bow fishing for carp. It never hurts to thin the herd of non-native species. They should have catch and kill tournaments for these fish in anticipation for more invasive carp that are on the way here. Good practice.

Saltydog, I tried my hand at bow hunting carp years ago. It took a while to figure out where to aim because the water refracts the light. Aim low and in front of them

Once you shoot them..what do you do with them ? Not a criticism by any means, just curious what they're good for....

Okaaaayy we tried to resist, but after staring at this awhile, can't resist digging up ancient folk-lore about cooking Carp. Goes something like this:

Place Carp on a 1" Plywood board, coat heavily with a mix of corn flakes, cooking oil, and chopped up spicy Peppers. Let sit for two hours. Then put in Smoker for several more hours - or days - depending on how much time you have.

Check hourly for consistency and taste, then finally remove Carp.

Toss Carp in Garbage Can, eat Board.

but there's truth in that....smoking will make anything taste good. If you can smoke it, I'll eat it...

As kids back in the 60's in Toronto, we used to sell Carp we caught in the Humber River (secret corn meal recipe) to the rich folks on the Kingsway. They would bury them in the flower beds. I still remember old Mrs. Turner claim that they were the secret behind her prize-winning roses.

Wordpecker, I must say, that made me chuckle out loud. I am not sure what to do with them. Can one be charged for wasting a non-native/invasive species? I sure hope not. Bald eagles and raccoons would love the feast along with maybe minks?

I bow hunted carp 30 yrs ago and it was a blast. But what to do with them?

I tried cooking a small one. I filleted it and the meat has long white worms, looked like shoelaces. Pulled them out. Breaded and fried in oil. Turned into a grey mush, looked kind of like brains. Tasted about what you would imaging grey fish mush would taste like.

Didn't think about trying smoking them on a board.

Left out a couple for the coons. Not interested. Tried them for bear bait. Bears wouldn't touch it.

Other than the garden, I didn't find a use.

Probably is a real recipe for them but I didn't find it.

Too bad there isn't a dog or cat food factory around. The bow hunting is a blast but like everyone has said what to do with them. I don't have a prize winning rose/cannabis garden either

Carp were originally brought to this country as a food fish to be raised in ponds. They are sought by some Europeans, I know Jewish people use them in some dishes and have heard it's a traditional German Christmas Eve dinner. I remember large tanks of live carp in Lowblaws and Dominion Stores in some areas of Toronto in the 60's. Common carp were brought to the United States in 1831. In the late 19th century, they were distributed widely throughout the country by the government as a food-fish. One story I heard is that flooding caused the escape from some ponds introducing them to the wild. After over 40 years of muskie fishing my wife's and my own health issues are likely to keep me on shore. I've been looking at a waterfront condo on th St Lawrence and I see a lawn chair carp rod and a sling shot in my future.

I'll pretty much mimic what Roblin said. Who would have thought bears wouldn't touch them either.
The only time i didn't mind eating carp was in a restaurant in Hungary where i ordered it just to see. Main difference was the fillet was from a 1-2 lber but could still taste a hint of brain mush.
So while it is a lot of fun shooting them, unless you or someone you know has a garden to bury them because sunflowers will also grow huge with one buried below.

This recipe also works very well on Sheephead and Merganser ducks!

Artificial Corn

When fishing for carp you often chum with bait... if you chum with corn you can actually use soft plastic corn as a hook bait and it lasts forever and you’ll catch a lot

Same concept as soft plastics for bass really

Also we use the plastic corn as a visual on other baits...
