2-stroke engine trouble

I read this forum all the time looking for tips and tricks that will help me and my kids catch a few fish, but post very little. Today I thought I'd share what is going to be a very costly mistake of mine, in hopes that it might help others. Also, hoping someone reading this might point me in the direction of a good outboard mechanic that can get me out of this mess.

Here's the situation: 2004 Mercury 60hp 2-stroke. The engine has a separate oil tank and a mechanism to feed oil at the right ratio as the engine runs. I always kept it full. I am the third owner, purchasing the boat and motor 1.5 years ago. At the end of last year I was suspicious that the auto-oiler wasn't working properly, but I hadn't had the boat long enough (or I wasn't paying close enough attention) to be confident that the oil level wasn't dropping at the proper rate.

Anyway, it was the end of the season, and my research suggested those mechanisms aren't worth fixing - just mix your own gas. So, that's what I did starting this spring. Too late. Unfortunately, on our fourth trip out, after running the engine for 2-3 min, it quit. Started up again just fine - got on plane and it did it again. Crap. Used the kicker motor to get back. Back at home, a compression test revealed normal compression (110psi) on the top and bottom cylinders, but only 20psi on the middle one.

So, the cylinder +/- other parts are likely ruined. Probably needs to be machined and a new piston installed, at least. Called one shop and was told it would be several thousand to fix - IF they can even get the parts. Yeah, I'm learning about engines the hard way.

We all know that oil is crucial for proper performance, but very bad things can be brewing even when the engine seems to be working fine. Anyone else with an engine that has an auto-oiling system, beware - they fail and you might not know it in time to save your motor.

Sorry for the long story - hope it will help someone avoid the same fate. Now for the request. I live in Picton so looking for a good honest mechanic in the area (Trenton, Belleville, Kingston) who could take on this job and help get us back out fishing. Thanks in advance.

there is a mercury marine mechanic on highway 62 Belleville next to tints by attain, I cant remember his name, my son used him and he was good and reasonable..

A number of folks mix the fuel and oil themselves and discontent the oil tank. It's an option

Thanks for your suggestions, guys. Just got off the phone with Glen. He's going to make time to look at it on Tuesday.

In the meantime, there'll be a few more fish left in the bay for the rest of you

A number of years ago i had a 75hp that the same thing happened to. I made the mistake in trying to fix it and it cost me just about 4k first time. The motor ran ok for about 2 years then failed again. Took it back to the shop again and was quoted 3-4 k for repairs as it was out of it's 1 year warranty. I ended up buying a a demo motor which was the right thing to do. That lasted me about 12 years before i sold my package and upgraded. I would look for a 4 stroke that has been looked after if you are going to replace the motor. They seem to last longer. Good Luck.

Definitely disconnect the oiler and mix your gas. Failsafe for sure. Try Tony in Deseronto 613-968-3962

Buddy of mine did that to a new-to-him snowmobile. He was so happy to have the oil injection and dismissed my advice to also premix his first tank until he could confirm the mixer was working. Made it about 3 km.

I Was talking to him monday and him or his son picked up parts at my store on tuesday while i was out
