Finally had the pleasure to run into Dan Elliott at the boat launch and meet him for the first time.
He looked mildly confused when I said "Hokey Smokes it's Dan Elliott"...obviously he's more famous than he realizes. And he told me to post a report of today - so I thought I would even though it's not a great report. But hey - thats fishing.

I know it's a little early, but with a bit cooler weather this past week and cooler mornings, I got the itch to see if the pike bite has started. Decided just to take my son out trolling and quickly realized that I may have jumped the gun by a few weeks. Water temp was still around the 69-71 degree temp...

I'm not big on trolling for pike but thought it would be my best bet to get my son onto some fish and we trolled all over the place. Finally found some trolling, and then after we found some decided to cast a little bit and picked up two more. Ended with 6. No real size to any of them though.

Here's my son with the first little one of the day and also a double header in the net that made my son pretty excited.

Nice to finally meet you Dan! Hope to see you out there again sometime.

Yes a little early, but it doesn't look like your son agrees !! I too met Dan for the 1st time a month ago and was very impressed. A nice guy who happens to be a pretty darn good fisherman.

Thanks guys!
As you can tell by my net size - I did not catch the caliber size gators that I was aiming for. Hopefully find some big ones this fall.

One of my favorite times for pike is right after a frost.
Head to the shallows with lilly pads and you will hear the pan fish feeding on the bees that are eating the lilly pad sap.
A 1/4 oz white spinnerbait zipping across the pads will show you where the pike are.
I am also amazed by the numbers of pike that can be in a small area.

Thanks for the report and pictures. I'm glad you caught a couple.
