Drive 20 minutes north of Sharbot and you're in the middle of "Trout Country". A lot of the small highland ponds/lakes north of Ompah and Plevna get heavily stocked by the OMNR with Rainbows and Splake (Brookies and Browns too).
Mosque Lake is probably the easiest to access with the best boat ramp...they dump over 7000 yearling Rainbows into it every year. It has a few cottages but is big enough for some elbow room.
A bunch of lakes along the Arcol Rd get good numbers of stocked Trout. This is the North Frontenac Parklands... its's all Crown Land, semi-wilderness (not a cottage in sight)...the road requires a 4WD truck/SUV most of the year (sleds or ATV's in winter)..you need to buy a permit to use the road and make a reservation if you want to camp...
https://www.northfrontenacparklands.com/The Arcol Rd runs right by Mair Lake (3000 yearling Rainbow stocked annually) and Granite Lake (2000 yearling Splake stocked annually), both have primitive boat launches suitable for tinnies. However, my favourite lakes in this area are a little further off the beaten path...you'll need an ATV or hike-in...check out Fish ON-Line for stocking reports...some of these "ponds" get big numbers of adult Trout dumped into them by helicopter.
A lot of these small lakes get the most traffic in winter...when sleds make for easier access. However, I like to fish them at ice out or just before freeze up...the fish are active and prowling the shallows. Ice out is usually the middle of April up there. The Black Fly bite and the Trout bite usually go hand-in-hand....
They may not be wild fish, but these Trout sure taste great when they come out of the smoker....they are nothing like the "greasers" that come out of Lake O.
