Quinte Fishing

Sturgeon caught in the Fraser R. Sept 21/ 06. It was fun, with a 4 1/2 fter being my personal best. The largest I have heard from the Bay of Quinte area was a 217 pd specimen taken in a net in 1952.

I noted that a gentleman on the board wanted to fish I believe today or next Thursday. Perhaps this might be of interest to him an others.

The method of fishing was to cast a large "stink bait" (rotted salmon...and yes I am very serious and yes....it was awful smelling). 130 pd. test was the line with reels like one would use for downrigging in Lk. Ont. being used to cast. Rods were roughly 8 ft with a med- heavy action.

The fight was very impressive, with my own largest taking an estimated 15 minutes to reel in. A few 1/2 jumps (1/2 body out of the water). Seals were observed and a bald eagle which is very common.

PS. The Bakers Doodle Bug seems to be more of a regional favourite................

Oooo nice fish!!

Stink bait eh... Too bad the quinte was fished so hard for them years ago. I'd read she used to hold lots of those guys at one time. Many years ago....

congrats !! that's a nice fish, I remember not too long ago they did a show on fishing sturgeon in the fraser, Mark Krupa's show. that's one powerful fish, I don't have any tackle that would last through that, you'd need some kind of baitcaster for that!!
