I went fishing with my son yesterday at Huffs and thought I would share what we saw and how it went.
Well first off, the ice was not very good at all. I was shocked that where I saw 4-5 inches of ice (if you could call it ice) I could throw the spud through in 2 throws. We ventured out about 100 meters from shore spudding all the way while each wearing floats suits, claws and a throw rope and were following the path of others from that day. Still only felt semi comfortable, especially with the strong current underneath. I am not fishing tonight specifically because of the quality of the ice and strongly recommend that all wait until at least the weekend and then bring all the same safety equipment I mentioned above if planning to venture out to test ice. We not only had soft ice, but slush under the snow above the ice!! This cold snap hopefully will stiffen it up a bit but I don't expect much to build with the current and the snow that is on top right now insulating the ice. Please also note we ventured to the right of Huffs as I observed when the ice froze up that there was a huge hole open in the middle straight out from the launch for quite some time and as such it probably has worse conditions than what I described above.
In the end we marked a couple small arcs on vex between 4- 430, caught one walleye around 1.5 pounds at 4:20. Be Safe, Tight Lines,
Shawn
