Over the last couple of years I've caught a number of Bass that have black spots on the surface of the skin. Sometimes a small growth, but often just a pigmentation of the skin...like a birthmark or tattoo. It seems to be very common in Smallies from Lake Ontario...very occasionally on Bass from an inland lake. Looks harmless (I don't eat Bass anyway)...but does anyone know what it is ?

Someone pointed me to this condition...melanosis...it's the pigment in the skin. Kind of like the "Michael Jackson" syndrome...definitely not a parasite.
