From what I recall from the past couple of years, they are a full month behind from when I normally start catching them, but the first couple of walleye have finally found their way onto the end of my line at the mouth of the Trent.
Got one this past Monday morning and two yesterday evening. I caught all the fish at anchor (in the area of the first set of cans at the mouth), mooching a minnow on the bottom, well downstream of the boat. A small red & white jigging spoon with a treble stinger was the rig that worked for all three.
The eyes were all small...less than a pound each...but I'm hoping that they are the 'scouts' and the big ones are following not too far behind.
Also of note, this past Sunday morning I caught a 7 lb brown trout in the same spot, with the same set-up. It was a brilliantly colored male, unfortunately, my phone was too cold and wouldn't let me take a picture.
Tight lines.
