Personally, I would be lobbying to transplant them to local lakes where they are allowed

The SmallMouth Bass in an unstocked lake which drained into the Miramichi was also targeted for extermination, happened a couple years ago.

In northern Ontario...anywhere north of Sudbury/North Bay/hwy 17..they are essentially considered an invasive species by the locals. They feel they're displacing "desirable fish" like Walleye and Trout. Hence, the OMNR has established an all year round retention season. You can legally rip 'em right off the spawning beds and keep 'em.

BC is a very different place. The bulk of the anglers cherish the notion of native fish in their original or close to it watersheds.

In the south around Osoyoos and east along Hwy 3 there is a small degree of acceptance for bass. Largemouth in that area and some that I understand can be quite substantial in size.

On the island, where the lake mentioned is, there is a similar dynamic. There also exists a small bass fishing organization that holds or used to run a few tournaments. Those too, are a bone of contention.

Tricky stuff. Loved my time living there, but the fishing politics are in a different league and a very different beast than eastern Ontario.
