First i would like to go on the record saying if you catch it you are entitled to keep it regardless of the season,i get ticked off when someone posts a pic of a fish and inevitably someone chimes in with "did you keep it or release it". If you caught it legaly you are allowed to keep it without anyones permission. My question is...do more anglers keep their fish when ice fishing? I understand tnat ice fishing allows anglers that don't have a boat an opportunity to fish.

I will keep fish a few times a year usually if I know or feel that it will not survive when released. My norm is 2 feed of walleye in the spring and 2 feed of walleye from the ice. Bass, pike, walleye, panners and others are released unless I am fairly certain that they will not survive.

I usually only keep fish in the Winter.

For Quinte I will keep 2 walleye...anything 3 lbs or bigger goes back.

Simcoe I will keep 10-15 Jumbo's.

Scugog whatever decent size crappie I can get my hands on with the occasional jumbo.

Great post and question, Jim.

I rarely keep fish but will any time of year and primarily, only if I'm having a special dinner with the grandkids or doing the once a year, big shore lunch for family at the cottage

When I am planning on keeping though, I can't catch them for the life of me!

Thank goodness, Capt. Georges is just down the road.

Cheers

Can't find fish when I want them either. My wife is also a Blue Noser and always asking if ( she means when )I brought home fish. The answer is Kingston Costco and Capt. George's in Amherstview on the way home. Good people and good food.

I don't ice fish. it's to cold, the ice is to slippery and this old guy don't bounce. I can be fairly consistent May till Sept my own boat rules 17-19 okay anything over or under goes back. As a general rule I don't freeze fish, I limit my intake to once a week. When I have company or newbies here for a fish fry I will freeze 2 as insurance for a feed, a sure anti Murphy tactic to catch fish on the day the guest are here!

Hi all, new to the area and first time posting on the board. Spent the previous 30 years on the shores of Simcoe. My kids grew up eating whitefish and perch and that makes me happy. That said, I sadly had a job that took up most of my fishing time. :x . Probably kept a dozen or so whitefish annually and maybe 5 or 6 perch feeds. I love to eat walleye but haven't fished yet around BOQ. Generally, I don't keep big ones but I'm hoping to get into some nice eaters soon!

I have 4 neighbours who love pickerel. I fillet them & every so often I get an apple pie or butter tarts. I will only keep between 17 & 21" Nothing bigger or smaller. I got quite a few tarts last summer and a few pies since Jan. 1. It's a good deal !! I never keep bass, but every so often a pike.

I keep limit of perch in spring from Simcoe and a limit in late November of perch and crappie. The rest of the year they go back. I may keep a few eyes for a change up and yes I also give some to my neighbours who do favours for me throughout the years. I rarely eat red meat anymore but eat fish 2-3times a week. I bag up my fillets in smaller portioned freezer bag fill with cold water than freeze. This will keep them good for well over a year and I adjust what I keep from there based on what I have. In other words I can count any labeled bags in October to know what I need to top me up over the winter before I decide what to keep in November.
