 Post subject: Ice Fishing Technique

Do you quinte ice fishermen jig two rods, or jig one rod and use a set line, or otherwise? I'm wondering if you jig two rods, if the fish may hesitate on which lure to hit.... but I've heard most don't use set lines on the bay..... what are your oppinions?

Thanks,
Brad

[I have not been up to Quinte for a number of years myself, but I recollect jigging with 2 lines and never using a set line(I even tried using the Windlass tipup with a spoon, but never had any success). On warm days, a little trick that i used to use was to drill 2 holes say 10-12 feet apart and stand over one hole with my rod in one hand. With the other hand, I would be holding onto another rod rigged with a jiggin spoon and minnow ensuring that my line went over my spud bar which I had place over the centre of the farthest hole. This technique worked well as long as there was not much snow or if it was not too cold to freeze up your line. Talking about fun..especially if you hooked onto a dandy and you had to keep pressure on your line at the same time going to the farthest hole to retrieve your catch!!! :P

Brad,

When I started fishing the Quinte area I also tried using
a Windlas Tipup and had no luck with it at all. I now leave
the tipup at home unless I fish just about any other lake.
A set line worked for me last weekend on St. George Lake.

On Quinte I drill two holes about 4 feet apart and use two
graphite jigging rods with Diawa 1300's loaded with good
quality clear 8-12lb test line. I drill a third hole in between
the two holes just for a flasher depth finder. I do not jig
both rods at the rythm, I jig one then the other. That way
you concentrate on each one more independant, and when
a fish hits you usually get them. I used to jig both at the
same time and missed fish like crazy. I also found jigging
slowly with long pauses works the best. Quinte is also, the
only place I have fished where 3 minnows on one jigging
spoon seems to have the best success. That's 3 mud minnows,
don't buy shinners. They die fast and don't seem to temp
those Quinte Walleyes the same as muds. One more thing,
On clear days when the fishing is slow I'm using 8-10 lb line,
while on overcast or active days I use 12 lb line.

I hope this is some help, The walleye are there ! I'll be out
this Saturday morning. See you out there. I'm the guy with
the Orange floater suit. Ha Ha :P
