Has anyone tried dipsys or something similar for the walleye? I thought it might be worth a shot since they dive down and away from the boat.

A number of anglers are using them, I believe you need some special rods for them.

They're used a lot on Lake Erie

If used on a 3 setting there is no reason these should not work. If you use a 1 or 0 setting the lure will still be behind the boat and deeper than you would beleive.
Yes SD there are special rods for this but a Med/Heavy rod does work.
We ran Dipsys on LKO for a couple of years with Rino rods but have since moved on to steel line setups.

I use them often down on Lake Erie and have yet to try them on Quinte, but they will work great. With a little bit of practice and setting them they can be as effective as downriggers. The large ones do have alot of pull so you will need decent rod to handle it.

Why use a Dipsy when you can just clip a snap weight to your line? Thoughts?

Pete, a Dipsey will give you a more percise depth control than a snap weight. (when used in conjunction with a line counter reel) It is also less speed dependent then a snap weight for obtaining and maintaining depth.

And it also takes your line out to the side....
As I read the notes, I got to thinking that the small size ones should get a place in our spread. The small ones would allow more line out to acheive the same depths but further out to the side.

In bigger body of water there is set thermocline at cretin depths. Dipsy divers works great In lake Erie for walleye and in Lake Ontario for salmon & Trout if you are lucky to find magic depth you can really make killing, BOQ channel is small and thermocline changes every hour and some how these big mama’s are very sensitive form sound and presence of divers. Flat lines and planner boards are best bet in this water.
