Quinte Fishing

I just finished building a portable ice hut for this season. I looked all over the net for prints and finally found what I thought was the best design. It cost me about 170 bucks in material, has 6 holes in the floor, vented for propane heat. It weighs maybe 100 pounds.

I believe I have seen one very similar used by a gentleman from Napanee that frequents this board using skis mounted on the bottom. I used to see so many interesting ideas, especially on the Bay of Quinte, Lake Simcoe and Quebec. I always liked the individualism demonstrated in the ideas be it heating, design, colourful exteriors, etc.

I now see a massive shift towards making or buying them as portable as possible, given that a stationary hut is far too cumbersome given our short season. When I am presently travelling with work, I see none near Vancouver(no ice to note)..... and a strong following in parts of Alberta.

Homeward bound very shortly. Hopefully I will see some nice Bay of Quinte ice....and walleye during Christmas.

I had 2 huts at one time that looked exectly like that. Mine only had 2 fishing holes. 6 sounds like potential trouble with line tangles. They were great huts for fishing. Biggest problem was that they were too low to the ice. A couple inches of snow + pulling them by hand was quite a task. Got around that by building a pair of skis out of thread rod, nuts, washers, + runners made of 2" X 8". Also watch those tarped sides + getting a heater too close to them. Melts or burns a hole pretty quick. Anyways, just a bit of insight from someone who's been there.

We need more huts on the Bay, we need more people on the Bay. Back in the day when George Street was the place to be it was awesome. All the huts on the Bay, paved pathes between them. Some guys even use to put up street signs. Am I longing for the old days? Maybe. It was fun and alot of people caught fish. There were ice derbys back in them days. Mike and Alf Delaney ran them every year. Icefishing has certainly changed. It's more a Quiet Society. We need to get the word out. Icefishing is fun,there's fish,build a hut,drill a hole and get out there.. Gary

ya nothing better than a town of huts!! I've been to lakes where there have been like a houndred huts. BBQ's every where and people lookin out for each others hut and of course lots of drinks for all. ps don't drink and drive

I built and use a hut like this on BOQ. It works fine for me. But just as "the ziffel" said, it is a little hard to pull in the snow. No problem if I have the quad. Lokking forward to this years hard water!!!

I went to a Goodwill and paid $8 for my skis, hooked up a long belt to a snap ring harness that fastened around my waist and walked out at Shermans Point I have included a site to view when this was up in Simcoe with the kids.
