Hey fellow fisher people....just wondering if you've seen any increased success with red trebles instead of the regular brass/silver.

Sharp hooks are absolutely critical to your success, especially when trolling with side planer boards or downriggers because you don't have the rod in your hand to set the hook.

The hooks that come with some lures are simply useless - especially the ones that come with Mann's Stretch 20+ lures - those hooks suck.

For my money, I replace the hooks with Excalibur hooks. Those buggers have a menacing torque built into them, and when a fish bites, it's a lot more likely to stick.

Keep your hook file handy, and make sure your hooks are "sticky sharp". For what it's worth, those new red trebles that come with the Taildancers [?] are pretty good, almost as good as Excalibur. Go buy yourself a bunch of Excalibur hooks and a set of pliers with a little split-ring-opener thingie on the end, and start changing hooks. You will catch more fish, for sure.

I fish a lot in Lake Erie and in BOQ, so far the best hook I have seen is Mustad Ultra point. Single hook for worm harness and treble hook for Stick baits. Red colour ? I guess makes the difference.

Desi is right. Mustad Ultra Points, I PREFER WITHOUT QUESTION the Ultra Point red WIDE gap trebles. Especially on my jigging spoons for under the hard water at Quinte.

Hi Iceman,
I do practice catch and release but not on those lakes and oceans where commercial fishing is allowed. I understand and appreciate your concern. This pictures was taken at lake Erie.

A lot of fishing shows and magazines advertise about using red hooks but I have noticed no difference from red hooks and normal coloured hooks.

Last year on a local 'eye lake down here, we usually troll shortly after ice out until the middle of may. We tested Hot 'n Tots (local hot bait) with reds and without red trebles. 5 to 1 fish on red trebles to those without. That is first hand experience.
