Just got back from our day trip to the Bay. The day started out pretty crappy. First we woke up to rain. Got to our trailer and got the boat all ready at the camp and proceeded down the ramp to launch and found that the owner's son had blocked it off with his dock  I had always launched from Hay Bay and had never trailered down to the ferry and was worried that we'd waste an hour and a half looking for it. No problem finding it and not as far as I thought. Did managae to lose one of my riggers on the way there though   Stupid tab lock mounting plate design.

Anyways, got her launched and motored by one boat on the way to just past the lighthouse as the winds and waves were coming from the East pretty good. The weather was crappy but we pretty much had the whole Reach to ourselves! Ended up 4 for 4 with one 29.5 incher, 30, 30.5 and a 32 incher. Didn't weigh any as I think the battery died in my scale. I'm not sure what the 32 incher weighed but I think it was my personal best, probably beating my 13 lber from a few years ago. Joanne finally got her first fall fish which we'll just call a double digit for lack of a working scale  It was a 29.5 incher.

We were in the water by 12 and out by 3 and ran into a couple of guys from Kingston who were just launching as the winds were really picking up. If you guys read this hope you did well and didn't get too soaked in your tiller with no top. Anyways, it was a nice way to end the year....unless I can make it up next Friday. I'd have to replace my winch strap which broke part way back to camp but that's just kinda the day it was I guess. :?

The magic lures were the Cabela's Reef Runner type baits in all Purple and Pink with Yellow belly. We ran a Wonderbread coloured one but didn't get a fish on it. 2 were off boards and 2 off flatlines. I'll post pics later after a few brown pops.

cheers
Ken

Oh you crazy buggers!

I was looking outside yesterday, in the wind being driven by an east wind and I thought, "nobody would be crazy enough to fish today, not with that east wind!"

Pretty amazing fishery, if you can catch fish in an east wind like that. Nicely done.

Brrrrrrr....... it was much nicer out on Thursday.

When I was launching the boat and looking at the east wind I was thinking of you Pete. I said to Joanne, "Damn, that guy Pete says never go out in an east wind!". We had already made the trip and it wasn't like we had done well with a west wind either so we put 'er in. At least we had a top and blackcat heater. The guys that went in after us I don't think even had floater suits and it was raining pretty good. As far as the forecasted 15 km/h winds...yeah right! Probably closer to 35 or 40. Anyways, always an adventure. Next Friday maybe....

cheers
Ken

Thanks Phil. I sent you an e-mail the other day to see if you wanted to join us. It may have ended up in your spam folder. We may head up next Friday. Talk to you soon and Merry X-mas.

cheers

It has been my experience - proved experientally - the "when the wind's from the west the fish bite the best, when the wind's from the east the fish bite the least."

This being said, there are exceptions to every rule. It's usually more of a barometric - cold front thing, perhaps. After cold fronts, it's harder to catch fish. But if you can time it just as the cold front arrives, you can sometimes really kick ass! There was another time this fall when [Dan?] went out in an east wind, and still managed to catch fish. There were times when there were near-perfect west winds, and I couldn't catch a damn thing.

But this time of year, it's hard to miss, I guess!

Fish are like girls - you can't catch 'em unless your line is in the water. Anyone willing to go out in east wind and rain is either really determined or totally nuts - just look at those waves! Either way you have earned my praise and respec'.

So give us the beta - where, how, when, what lures, depth, speed, all that. Our boat is still there, so we plan to get out a couple more times before we head south on January 5.

Hey Phil

Friday is a definite possibility. I'll let you know.

Pete

The magic lures were the Cabela's Reef Runner type baits in all Purple and Pink with Yellow belly. We ran a Wonderbread coloured one but didn't get a fish on it. 2 were off boards and 2 off flatlines. I'm not sure if the sale is still on a $1.99 us per lure. I picked up 7. After duty, taxes and shipping it came to $27 US so still only about $4.50 a lure taxes and everything in.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=email&id=0042633119377a&navCount=0&podId=0042633&parentId=cat602209&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=1AG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat602209&hasJS=true

We ran the #009, 011 and 039. Speed was between 1.8 - 2.3 mph. Started around the light house on the north shore and trolled back towards the ferry. 2 fish came running a 150ft back on the flat line and the other 2 on 200 feet back and then 100 ft more for the board.

cheers
Ken
