Hi there!
I was wondering if there's anyone here who's looking to catch carp/longnose/pike using flyfishing gear.
What rods/reels do you use?
How long is your leader? and how do make it?
What flies do you use?
How do you look after fish? Do you see them in the water or you fish where you think they may be?

I hope i'm not annoing you,
Thank you,
Mike.

There are a few knowledgeable flyfishers in Belleville. Nick at The Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine spends countless hours chasing Gars, Carp and Bass with his fly fishing gear. I would definetely look up the magazine as they have done articles on the bay itself.

check the Summer 2002 issue, they may still have copies. Its got a good article on Gar fishing.

I use an 8wt, for leaders I make my own, I use furled leaders, for tippet, I usually just use 8lbs test, haven't really had a problem with bite offs, flies I tie for gar are zonker rabbit strip flies with a stinger hook, gar tend to attack on and angle and just snap at a fly, so when they grab the zonker right in the middle, set the hook and the trailer hook will get them in the other side of the mouth, these flies have increased my landing of gar over 80% !!! using single hook flies my strikes were 100% and my landing was 10% if I was lucky, I sight fish for them in less than 1' of water.
for pike I use whitlock eelworm flies, and a wire leader attached to my tippet. as for carp, I don't fly fish for them, WAY too hard, if you can catch a carp with fly fishing gear, you are a fishing god!! I just stick to my hobby of making my own secret boilie recipes to catch carp.

Hi mike.p,
Come into the store whenever Glen Hales is working and he can assist you in catching gar with a fly rod. He has done it on many occassions and has considerable knowledge on fly fishing. Glen is also a photographer for Canadian Fly Fisher magazine and he will be having a workshop at Carra Outdoor Sports this spring on flyfishing the local rivers and the bay for gars.

We will also be seen this June on the banks of the BOQ with our carp gear fishing for carp. We are both looking to have quite a season of fishing and I for one will look forward to Glen's workshops and learning to fly fish.

Best regards,
Sam
