Quinte Fishing

G'day all.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of a crappie population the bay has. I am hearing lots of rumours about them being caught, but I have never seen or caught any myself on quinte.

we have caught crappie while fishing for bass in the big bay area....

obviously if they are hitting spinnerbaits you can imagine the size of them.

Well, this was one of a few we caught just off the mouth of the Salmon River.

I know I can't wait until the water temp gets to 50 degrees, thats when they say that the crappie really start feeding. Try weedy bays or the mouth of any incoming river or creek. Good Luck!!

.... Catching crappie is the easiest thing to do. now finding them is really the hard part.......... we have a few lakes around my area with great crappie fishing. and usually as a rule soon as the ice is gone we start fishing them hard. usually working areas real close to shore in just 2 or 3 feet of water using small repala stick baits. work the shore line as if your fishing bass, and keep going til you find them.
Summer is a bit different. they love to school, but you just never know where yer gonna find them... one of the best tricks i know is when you do catch one in the summer , hook that fish to a long lead of line attatched to a bobber and put it back fast as you can that fish will rejoin the school. and as the school moves around you just follow the bobber, and stay with the fish til you have got enough for a good feed.
My tackle choice for the summer is usually little tube jiggs,4 pound test line, and an ultralite rod, crappie love to hit on the drop, so watching the line is the key. you dont usually feel the strike but if you pay close attention to the line you can see the strike,,,,,,,, a gentil lift at the right time is all it takes

Like Steve, I (and my crew of buddies) caught a few unplanned crappies last summer bass fishing. Also hitting spinner baits... Most were in the 12 to 14 inch range...

We have never specifically targeted them though.

Ya I love to go out with the smallest bobber, and when it comes up and lays on its side Set the hook!!
