Walleye Lure Recommendation

Long story short, I have this trip to Michigan this weekend. My family and I will have the opportunity to shop at Cabela’s in Dundee. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this store, and we are willing to spend a couple bills to increase our walleye tackle selection. I realize there are many unique and effective lures that us Canadians can only get from the States.

* walleye trolling lures? Shallow and deep?
- Manna’s (I remember ppl talking abt it on this board) Which model and colour?
- Taidancer?
- Recommendations?
- Spring, Summer or Fall lures?

Haha, basically recommend anything that works

I’ll consider them and I’ll always report their effectiveness when I do get a chance to use them.

I’m really excited for this trip, at the same time I’m counting down the days for the Walleye opener on BOQ.

Some nice eaters I caught last Spring in Deseronto area. (Orange-Mepps Blk Fury)

I'm not sure about lures we can't get here but my "go to" lures are:

- Rapala Shad Rap SR5 and SR7 for trolling I find blue and the tiger glow blue work really well.

- I also love to use stinger hooks when using harnesses, jigs, or spinners.

I usually try the shad raps and or harnesses first then try jigging or running spinners (mepps aglia 3 with a stinger) and by then somethings worked. Have fun at Cabela's, what and awesome place. Take a list and a budget or your blow your bank account :lol:

A buddy of mine has a crank bait called "Ugly Duckling."

He was given 2 by a buddy of his that bought them in the States somewhere. I've searched around here and asked but no luck.

Every year for the opener, he does extremely well with these. They have a web site....

Just a brief note about lures....

CONFIDENCE....is required in whatever lure you put on your line. If you believe in the lure then you will fish it properly.

A number of years ago, some people I knew were getting fish when no one else was catching. They were swearing by Ugly Ducklings, I picked them up and tried and tried and have never caught anything. There's something about them that doesn't appeal to me. I've tried em and then pulled em off..

NOW.... CC Shads, / Shad Raps / and Uzick Spinners all work at different times of the year. The Husky Jerk, both shallow and deep divers work very well also. once again at different times of the year.

For the fall, then the Manns / Power Dives/ Tail Dancers(TDD11)/ Reef Runner are all proven fish takers.

Remember the motto of the Lure Makers - " Lures catch fishermen - some will even catch fish"

If at Cabelas have a look at their Walleye Lure Kit, they sell some lures that look like Reef Runners and a close friend and fishing bu got some last year and hit three fish on them

I agree whole heartedly with Superdad confidence is by far the most important factor. I think primarly because you keep running the bait when the bite is slow because you know it works. If you don't have confidence in it you keep switching which isn't always bad but sometimes it just takes time. We have a small tackle shop here at our campground down by the Sandbanks and a few years ago I bought a bunch of stock from a tackle supplier in it was a couple ugly ducklings. I honestly haven't tried them but I think I have a few left if somebody wants them.

I know the bigger lures work well in the fall..... have you ever had much luck trolling them in the spring?

I picked up a bunch of reef runners at BPS a couple of weeks ago. Great colours too.

You're so correct about confidence.....do you think the fish feel that too :lol:

I've been trying to get the Ugly Ducklings but to no avail. I'm was hoping to order them on-line but no luck there. I've emailed them to see.

If i was going to get anything i would get Rebel Minnows the big size in black and silver.

my pennys worth
in the spring = shad raps # 7 and # 9 black and silver [9's in deeper water]
in the fall had good luck with reef runners
little rippers and deep reef runners best by far color was bubblegum
also in the fall had good luck with deep taildancer
kind of purpleish color i think it was called irredecent
then of course the worm harness always works in the early part of the year.

The last time I saw Ugly Ducklings on the showroom was at Gagnons in Oshawa.

Don't discount larger lures in the spring. There was an article in 'Walleye In-sider about larger lures in the spring in the March issue. Very interesting.

Fishing World In Hamilton has them and they likely ship.

Shad raps, Tail Dancers (smaller sizes for me in spring). R.R Little Rippers, Worm Harnesses, Jointed CC Grappler Shads, AC Minnows (purple or blue).....so many.

Funny how year to year it seam's like there's a new "hot" lure that works better than most on the Bay. Moons ago, the walleye diver (for us any way) way the go to crank. A couple years back, the cotton Cordell CCshad (still works for me - see user name) was the hot one. Now tail dancer's, Mann's ugly ducklings etc. seem to be the most sought after by walleye and angler's alike!

Spinner's, jigs, bottom bouncer's or floating rigs. Different lures at different times, but if you could pack only one type, one color to entice a B.O.Q. walleye....What would it be
