I'm in the process of purchasing a 19' boat and motor and am curious about your experiences. I chose between a an E-Tec, Optimax, Suzuki, and Honda. Heres what I heard

E-tec - run lean and have problems

Optimax - has improved a lot in the last few years but still has its problems.

Suzuki - is a great motor but dealers have serious problems getting some parts.

Honda - Great motor but the dealer network is not good ie not a lot of dealers.

Just curious what experiences people have had. Also curious on boat recomendations.

Scott,

Hands down Yamaha. Good dealer in Belleville at J&P Marine. YAmaha have won numerous JD Power & Associates consumer satisfaction awards for both their 4 stroke and 2 stroke HPDI engines. I have a mercury on my boat but when its time to replace it it will be a Yamaha

I currently have a 40 HP 2 stroke Yamaha. I am satisfied with it but the motor that I really wanted was a Nissan. They cost about 25% more and are 2 stroke but have fuel consumption better than a 4 stroke due to the design they use. You get the weight advantage and logevity of a 2 stroke with the best fuel efficiency on the market. Their warranty is also superior to any other brand. These motors are used by the US Coast Guard on their smaller water craft. They are also the motor of choice for Arctic & Antarctic expeditions.

Last year was my first year with my 135 Optimax, no problems, great gas mileage, i think as good as I had on my 90 merc 4 stroke.

Or you can take the road less traveled and purchase a vintage Johnson Seahorse 6-stroke. I don't know what they are like but with a name like Seahorse you can't go wrong. While your at it you may as well get an old tri-hull boat with seats that stretch out so that you can sun bathe while trolling. Most of these boats also came with ash trays and record players. Nothing like listening to a Frank Sinatra or Mel Tormey ballad while hauling in a sunfish wrapped in seaweed that feels like it weighs as much as a pike. Good luck with your purchase, I hope this information helps you make the right choice.

thank you all for your input. I appreciate it. I looked at the G3 boats but their 18' has the windshield towards the back of the boat and doesn't leave a lot of room in the back of the boat but has a big casting deck on the front which isn't my primary use of space especially when I'm salmon fishing. I asked if they had any other models and they didn't. I was bitter because I've heard lots of great things about the G3 boats and Yamaha motors.

Check out the Lund Tyee magnum 1950 or for less money the 18 or 20 ft Sport Angler model. These models all feature a pushed forward full windshield and tons of aft floorspace. Also a very deep cockpit with high sides which provide plenty of big water confidence and safety.I've had my Lund 1950 Tyee GS on Quinte in high winds several times and big waves and rough water are not a problem.Take a serious look or test drive one with a new Verado w/smartcraft and i'm sure you won't be dissapointed!Either boat would also make and great Lake Ontario salmon boat.

When you get into the bigger V-6 engines there is one thing you need to remember, they all have problems.

I have a 175 Optimax and I am very impressed and pleased with it. Before this one I had a 150 Johnson carbed. It was also a great engine. I know people who have had every brand except Suzuki and Honda (simply because there aren't that many V-6's out there) who have had major problems. Your best bet is to get the one that has the best warranty and price. Go to Belleville Sport and Lawn and you won't be sorry, their service is top notch.

Scott,
The Yamaha Dealer in Belleville rigs doesnt sell the G3 boats. He sells Smokercraft baots rigged with Yamaha. Buddy of mine bought a "Pro Angler" with a 75hp 4 stroke and a 8hp 4 stroke kicker jsut this past season. He took it back part way through the season because he thought the gas guage wasnt working. To be safe he would keep topping up the tank. Ends up it was working fine, he just wasnt use to little gas the rig yamahas would use. 8)

Lund + Yamaha = Perfection! Just an opinion.... :)

As for J & P Marine, Belleville...highly recommended!

Best of luck in with your eventual buy

Mac

Before you go to far down the Yamaha road you will be OK with the 4strokes as they make XL shaft for 25" transoms, but if you are looking for the grunt of the HPDI they no longer make XL versions needed for most walleye boats. Not sure why Yamaha made this move?

Have fun motor shop'n...

Yamaha for sure. I've had lots of motors and I like Merc and Yamaha now. Never had ANY problems with the three Yamahas I have.
If I were buying now it would be Yamaha.
For boats I don't think you can go wrong with Lund.

Good luck and take your time.

Whatever you get -make sure you can have it serviced by a reputable dealer close to you.

Hooked Up

If you end up with a Verado and Ranger and have issues let me know-I have lots of experience.....

Thank you all for your input it is very much appreciated. I have actually chosen the 1850 Lund Tyee with a 150 Honda and a 15hp Honda kicker from bay marine. I was interested in the Yamaha but could only get Lund and Yamaha from Hastings marine and this is an hour north of me. I really wanted to stay local as I bought my last boat from Peterborough and hated the service experience. The last engine that I had was a Honda 75 and I loved it but had heard many great things about yamaha too. Anyway, good to hear nice things about the Lund I'm really excited about it. Thanks again for your input and just curious of what experience anyone has had with Bay Marine. Dan play nice they advertise with you :D !! I wish I had joined this forum earlier it would have been nice to get this information earlier. I looked all over the web for boat reviews and didn't find much and of course every dealers sells the best product and everyone else is garbage so who do you believe? Its nice to hear from the consumer.
