I have been watching this topic for a while and seeing all the responses seems to me more people are like me.I just stay away from the river at this time because i'm not sure what i would say or do.I am in customer service and on of our customers came in (native) and said his freezer broke down and lost all of his fish/deer and so on boy did my heart pump piss for him as i laughed in my head. The bs going on at the quarry is just that B.S..They found some batteries and oil tanks in bottom of quarry and called the M.O.E. in as the believe it is leeching into the ground water,HAVE YOU EVER TAKIN A RIDE DOWN YORK ROAD.I believe all that SH** laying around in there yards wouldn't leech anything right old cars, oil tanks, batteries.Looks to me like one long junk yard. This guy at work had a good idea we should get a bunch of people and block them off from supplies smokes/gas and other supplies and see how they like it.They are lucky i have no say in Govt. as they would have no rights and be like the common man.Why can't they fish like us open seasons, limits etc. With the limits in place how could that not provide them enough food ?.I do realize it is as much the GOVT.'s fault as ours for not protetsing them, but why do they have to exercise there rights?.The GOVT. says women can go toppless in public do they no.I could go on but i won't ,This is only my opinion,K.M.B.F.

OR here's another example of taking advantage of rights! On Thursday after work I decided I'd go down and watch a few of the eyes running at the foot bridge........ GET there and here's these two IDIOTS sitting up top with fishing poles. Walk right up beside them and recognized both guys from high school.... Half Status! Have there ban card, but is it likely that SNAGGING is part of that HERTIAGE or WHATEVER YOU CALL IT! The one guy moved out to Vancouver Island and had come back to the area just to do this and take it back out there for whatever! Just pathetic and disgraceful morals in my BOOK!

Survival of the fittest usually referred to the animal side of the human race if one reads Darwin's work on evoluation. But we humans are different from animals.

I can understand why MNR did not investigate the quarry and support this action. One does not know exactly who or how long ago anything was dumped into it.

Regarding the landclaim, this one is a very, very sticky situation. I see no upside and no way to turn this around and suggest that in time, a few very large sums of federal money will need to be exchanged. As it stands, I can only remain hopeful that a remotely sane solution is worked out. The wildcards involved here, may very well have complicated various smoking establishments on the reserve that generate cash.

Spears on the other hand (original post), may not be going away, but could be minimized, and actually help the health and harvest of all involved. Replacing them with "no charge" live release landing nets actually has seen a couple of mature local aboriginals engage in a selective harvest of smaller males. This type of thing should be promoted and encouraged and could see an estimated drop that would be tough to quantify, but be a postive win win situation.

That sounds like a great idea.

I don't see Alberta slowing down production of oil because it hurts the environment. And I don't see these paper mills on the trent doing anything about all the toxins they release in the water that are killing all species. The natives have used the fish as one of their only resources for thousands of years. The wallaye are still plentiful and yeah there are a handful of people that abuse there rights but not all mohawks do and if we want to spear it is our right. Enjoy the opening weekend and stop bitching about this topic year after year it is getting OLD.

I believe that our rights allow us to "biatch" as much as we want, the same way your rights allow you to do what you do! So I humbly suggest that we will all continue to do so, until any of the powers that be tell either of us to stop or they get off their collective butts and do something about it!
Our federal government's policy of non action with respect to native issues is appalling. These people should be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, not sequestered into the abyss of un-caring politicians.
It's become a mockery of a travesty!
