Opening action

In conversation with one resort owner it seems the action is very good. He reported virtually everyone was catching walleye.
How are your results?...Larry

I don't go out on opening days, too many crazies that don't know what they are doing boat wize. But the weather is certainly great for an opener. We live about 100 yards from Brigton Bay and there was certainly a lot of boats out yesterday and today, I saw that the big walleye yesterday reportly from down Picton way was 13+ lbs. 10th place was over 10 lbs.

Hope everyone makes it home safe. The OPP had drinking & driving checks all around Brighton so be sober......

Fished Mohawk Bay and up the river..Saturday morning..bite was there ..but slow..seemed to be better as water warmed up...key seemed to be 5 to9 feet of water..slow presentation..we were bottom bounding with worm harness at .8 to 1.0, I used Gulp night crawlers to keep perch of, others in boat using worms...success about equal...didnt fish later Sat due to wind and difficulty of getting out of the dock where i was..wasnt worth the hazzel.. Picked up one on Sunday, same technique, but only fished for an hour or so before heading for home..back next weekend..see what happens as water warms up.

Fished Brighton Bay from 5:30am saturday, took a few breaks on shore till about 9pm. Lot's of smaller pike being caught, we managed one walleye around 6lbs caught at approx 6:30am saturday. East wind was tricky to deal with and brisk. More boats than I've ever seen in Brighton, I think this is because the winning walleye was caught in Brighton in 06. (Everyone please head to the county next year PLEASE!)
Many ignorant anglers- We were trolling for an hour heading east, this boat is at full speed, pulls up beside us and strarts trolling 15 feet away from us then cuts us off! Then they wave at us and ask how we're making out? Another boat at full speed zig zagging in and out of boats at dusk? Saw lot's of other fools with overloaded boats. Weigh in stations alos saw lot's of folks weighing in as many pike as they could to get their name in on hidded weight prizes. I have to wonder why the tournament organizers want to promote anglers putting fish into a live well, have them being stressed and slammed around in a cooler all day? Scrap the hidden weight idea, it's killing fish and I saw dead pike washed up on shore near the weigh in station because of this!
Nice weekend, had fun. Will be nice to make it out next weekend when I can have the bay to myself.
Did I mention that the winning walleye was caught down in Picton this year? Pike too!

I headed over to my trailer at Pickerel Park friday afternoon. I hadnt yet opened it for the year so I got there early to do the maintaince stuff. When I pulled up there was Mux, Snarfy, Wayne-o-matic and Mac setting up the tent right at the spot across from me. My father inlaw (Iceman) and Tipper (as in tipper back) showed up later. The whole crew was standing around having a few beers and we see the MNR already on the water pulling over boats. Then we see an OPP car pull up to the Pickerel Park docks and the MNR boat out in the water was escorting a boat over to the docks. The guy driving the boat was charged and cuffed for drunk driving. Great way to start the weekend off.

Saturday morning Iceman, Tipper and I headed over to the Napanee river and started jigging. MAn there were lots of boats in there. After spending the morning there and only coming up with one walleye and 2 pike a drum and perch we decided to do a bit of a troll up the reach heading back to HayBay. Tipper got a 4lber on an inline board using a spinner and worm. The wind picked up and after conferencing on the water it was decided to head back to camp have a nap and a early dinner then head out for an early evening troll after the wind broke. The wind never did settle down so that was it for saturday.
Sunday we decided to fish the flats right in front of Pickerel Park after hearing from various campers the fishing had been good on the flats. Some boats reported up to 40 fish with the upper size about 6lbs. Within a few moments we started catching fish. We ended up with 12-15 pickerel and numerous pike. No big monsters but some consistent action and good fun.

I'll Second that. What really surprised me that with all the boats and anglers
there were no bottle necks at the ramp and everything was very orderly.
A great opener at P.P. Everyone was catching fish.

Mux and his crew were great and fun was had by all.

whats that park like?
Im an avid camper and was thinking of going there....is it more for fishermen or families? my boy and I fish but wife/daughter dont and was wondering

I stay at Pickerel park as a seasonal camper and it's very much geared towards fishing and family. Great fishing close by and on site fish cleaning stations. There's a pool for the kids as well as a park and they are always doing things in the pavilion for the families, bingo, dances, kids fishing derby's etc etc. The owner is a wee bit of a tool IMHO but the park is decent.

Maverick pretty well hit the nail on the head. Its a pretty big park and they have the pool, pavilions, horseshoe pits, play equipment ect. I dont have any real complaints. I have 2 kids and they generally like it there. My wife loves it. In the summer I usually get up early and fish for a couple of hours then head in have breakfast then take the kids across the ferry and head over to sandbanks for the day. Back by 4pm. Then have supper and fish for a bit more in the evening. What more could one ask for?

Dan, a little off topic but my buddy and I got talking to your boys from newmarket at the cleaning station, real nice group of guys! We shot the *** for about 30 mins and real nice to meet good people on the opening weekend.

What a weekend....except for the wind, all was perfect.

We ended up with 1 @ 10.4lb, 1 @ 8 and a bunch of 2-3 lbers. Not bad considering how little time we were able to spend on the water because of the wind. We fished Hay Bay, just across from P.P

The Buddy that caught the 10.4 was his first ever walleye. He has a cottage on Beaver Lake, and has been fishing the opener for 15+ years. Go figure

Good on him though...maybe now he's finally stopped shaking. :lol:

It was a nasty looking fish and looks like it had just finished spawning. The tail was bleeding and gills ripped up pretty badly.

We were staying at Cedar Point Resort....as usual, Don and John treated us extremely well. We had a blast and everyone we met, really great people. You gotta love fisher-people!

thanks guys....my buddy has a cottage on hay bay from what he says directly across from the park and has bugged me to get up there one weekend...sounds perfect with activities,food,pool and a lake to fish at with walleye in it what more could a man want?

Well it seems as though there was the same wind as we had here in Ottawa for the weekend! Still it"s nice to not have rain as well as high winds.
It's interesting to hear about the areas that had success, something for everyone to take note of for next year!

well I can tell you guys I was in georgian bay at buddys cottage and we caught NO walleyes,hardly any were pulled from the water...local guide told us the ice was 2 weeks late and it has effected the bite last weekend,we did pull up a few pike and perch but all were returned
