I bought a new lowrance LCX 27C the GPS and Sonar unit. I have it mounted on a RAM mount and absolutely love it but am having a little trouble with it. It seems to read very erratically. It will read no problem sometimes until about 40 MPH then it starts to flash the depth and it loses the bottom echo. Sometimes even at a troll it won't read until I put the motor into neutral then it reads other times its fine. I'm assuming this is from cavatation but I'm wondering if someone can save me some time and a few extra holes in my new transom by letting me know which way to move the transducer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, I just installed a eagle sonar unit on my targa 18 and this unit is made by lowrance. The installation book gave good advice on the transducer mounting, the key is the transducer 'must' be in as perfect 90 degree to the water as possible. Also the center line of the transducer 'must' just below the bottom of the hull. I followed this method and have had very good results. The owners book also says that if you loose bottom contact at high speed to increase your sensitivity a littel at a time to correct. I hope this helps.

These types of problems are usually the result of improper location, depth etc. A good idea is to mount the unit to a small piece of lexan in the intended area. With this method you only have one set of holes in the hull. You can now adjust the position to suit your needs.
Also remember that the transducer must be in the most calm water comming from your boat. This will assure consistent accurate readings....Larry

If you're losing the data over 40MPH, the 'ping' should be at Maximum and over 40 MPH, the rebounding of the sonar will be lost as you are past the unit's ability to pick up the echo off the bottom.

I know that for searching for fish at 20MPH, Ping at MAX.

Hope that helps - read the ping section in the manual

The unit was installed at the marina, because I didn't have the time to do it. It looks like I should have just done it, now I have to do it again. I think the transducer is a little high as the centre line is just above the hull line. They mounted the transducer bracket all the way down too so I can adjust it up but not down so I'll have to drill some new holes in my brand new transom *&%$%&$#@!!!! I have been reading the maual and didn't realize how important it was to keep the wires apart and have dedicated power sources for the VHF and Sonar so I'm going to have to do this as well. I didn't know about adjusting the "ping" so I'll look into that. Its not only over 40 mph though it happens a lot below that too. I think its just poor transducer location and it cavitates sperodically. Anyway, thanks again for all your help its so nice to be a member of the board.
