Hey guys,
I have a questrion for all who know some about outboards. I have just upgraded my boat from a 1984 25hp to a 1994 30hp, both evinrude. With my 25hp I was getting about 23-24mph and with my newer 30 hp I have lost about 3mph. Could it be that my older motor was running a little harder than it should have been? Is there something I can check myself without ripping the motor apart?
thanks in advance
Blake

Hey guys,
thanks for the response. I dont have electric trim, although I have played around with the settings and it has made no difference. As for the pitch I havn't thought of that and I will look into it. On another note the motor really doesnt even sound like it is working all that hard when its opened up..I have played with the linkage on the throttle and seen no difference.

Give Pete at pete"s prop shop a call tell him motor size and boat size and weight he can recomend a prop for you. You could also take it to a marina and get them to run it with a tach and check rpm.

You will find that the newer engines sound a lot quieter. It also depends on the gear ratio of the bottom end. your prop speed might be slower.
Also check the shaft length. you may have to move the engine up or down. Check with a dealer. Good luck.

Blake, you didn't mention if the 30 hp is new or not. If it is new or very few hours it might need some running in.

Hey guys,
Again thanks for the reply's, I will definetely check the pro situation out. As for the shaft its a long shaft, but the transom is 20" so that is ok. I guess I will have to take it to a marina. Its not a new engine, I bought it from Pirate cove marina in Kempville. An older guy had it before me, he bought a bigger boat and the 30 was just to small to push it with him and his 2 other fishing buddies. As soon as I find out I will let you know. Again thanks for your input its much appreciated!
