Quinte Fishing

As the first tournament were only largemouth , just amend the rules that sets the boundary. If these guys come in and know they can go to the big lake and win they will all be here and the local guys will have a tough time.

Lots of local teams also make the run to the lake. I don't know why we would want to limit the boundries. Is it not about growing the sport and the series. I can understand the reasoning behind why early season the lake should be restricted. But to cut off the lake after that point does not make sense. All of you want a bigger series more money weill here it is. Guess what the level of competition has gone to the next level.

If you guys don't like it find a different series to fish. To those who brave the lake and get the fish kudos to you. It's a big gamble to go out there and I respect anyone who makes that decision. Remember there is many times people have made the run and come home empty handed. To simply make that run doesn't mean you will catch the fish or win the tourney.

Kudos to the QFS crew on another great season can't wait to hear what the dates and locations are next year.

Would you be making this post if it had been say.. the Lawrence brothers or Sherman/Seeley or one of the other local teams who have been running for smallies all season, if they had won? Bob and Derek deserve every cent they took home this weekend.
I was chatting with Bob at the George St launch just before he won one of the Bassamania events out of Trenton. He was going to do some largemouth prefishing as a back up but he told me he would be fishing the big lake for smallies. In his words "lake ontario smallies are the only way you are going to beat all the expert local largmouth fisherman on Quinte".

About the only thing you can do is fill your boat full of gas, buy some Gulp and head to the big lake. Pray it doesnt blow hard

I think everyone inolved in the quinte fishing series is doing a great job. Maybe Rocket you should start your own series and run it the way you like, or should i say the way you could make money. As the old saying goes ( If you cant handle the heat stay out of the Kitchen ). And for all of the staff at the quinte fishing series, keep up the good work.

Well said Kevro, remember this cpmplaining is coming from the guy who weighed in the biggest largemouth ever in the QFS history. It is possible to win any event the QFS holds with largies. As far as the fish dying when they get to Belleville, It's not much of an issue this time of year.

I had a lot of fun fishing the Quinte series this year and plan to come back next year. I only run a 100 hp boat and don`t have the option to go to the big lake yet and it still doesn`t deter me from fishing next year. I think the smartest thing they (QFS) did was to make the first tourney largies only and thats for the health of the smallies and the drastic temperature change. At this time of year, if they choose to gamble and hit the big lake thats up to them cause its still hit and miss. A few weeks back it didn`t pan out for Bob when he made the run and I even weighed in more then him it just so happens this time he kicked our A$$. Thats fishing!!!!
I will say that the only thing they could possibly change would be to earn aspot to the classic and not just buy your way in. This doesn`t really bother me either cause a few years back I never did the whole series but I paid to get in the classic.
Its a world class fishery and a world class tourney series with what seems like a lot less attitude which is exactly what the sport needs.

And Bob and Derek showed alot of class on stage when they basically told everyone how they fished and what baits they were using. That just doesnt happen very often and it goes to show that they welcome the competition.

I'm not going to get into the discussion of water bounderies but found it interesting that the slated 2008 Bassmania Tournament Trails Classic will be in the Bay and the Bay only.

What I did find interesting was the attitude that the 2nd place team (Chong) had that Izumi and Strub I don't think would. Chong was pretty upset not winning and when I heard him talking to someone beside me that knew him, they said to him as a joke to "smile" he said "no, we didn't win!"

Personally, I was just happy playing and I mean no disrespect to him.

Thanks to all the organizers, people that treated me so welll being a new person to tournament fishing and of course, my partner, the Rocket

....I can't wait til next year!

Well said Kevro!! Jeff kerr had big weight and didn't go far at all, I think I seen you there all year. Rocket why didn't you bring in that big bag? I think the best thing for the QFS would be the pairing of The Rocket and the Pocket Rocket Rob Coolie. Just my 2 cents

Just a few comments on this thread.

Firstly, Legacy with respect to your perception of Dave Chong at the weigh-in. I have known Dave for a number of years. He is a gentleman, a professional, a great ambassador to the sport and a fierce competitor. He is not satisfied with anything less than a win. To be one of the top anglers you have to go into each competition with the mindset that you can/will win. To take what you heard and put it into the proper context I would expect that Dave was being quite facetious with his statement. I am quite sure he was very happy for Bob and Derek but was simply not satisfied with his own performance. He was probably thinking about what went wrong and what they could have done differently to come out on top. Dave has always been very congratulatory to all anglers in competition.

Secondly, on the topic of whether or not Lake Ontario should be cut-off from tournament competition. Everyone in the tournament played by the rules. You do not cut off water simply because someone wins a tournament in a certain area. I fully agree with QFS’s decision to cut off the Lake in the early portion of the season, but this was for the benefit of the fish not the anglers.

A number of teams including Bob and Derek, Dave and Jeff, Chris and Matt, and others felt their best shot at winning the “bass” tournament was to target smallies in Lake Ontario. You can’t blame them. The fish can be huge out there, especially this time of year as they’re beginning to feed up. If they can get to the fish, get them to bite, land them and then get back to the weigh in you are not going to beat them with largemouth most days. They all accepted the known risks involved, the weather was good to them and Bob and Derek waxed us all fair and square.

However, as Kevro and Teppy point out, this is not always the case. On the first day of the Bassmania Trenton tournaments this past August Erny Janzen and I were fishing beside Bob and Wayne Izumi all morning. At 10AM we are talking to them and they tell us they have one good largemouth and 4 dinks. We have 2 good largemouth. They up and leave and head east. We continue to fish largemouth the rest of the day, weigh in 18 lbs and finish 13th. They go to the Lake, catch 4 good smallies to go with their largemouth, weigh in 20lbs and win. They gambled and made the right decision…that day.

The next morning the conditions look ideal for the guys heading to the Lake. We see Bob loading his boat with ice at a gas station. It appears to us that we will need a huge bag of largemouth to compete on this day. At the end of the day Bob and Wayne weigh 13lbs of smallmouth and we weigh 19 ½ lbs of largemouth. They again took the risk and it did not work out.

It’s all about decision making.

Now this is where my long-winded story has a large hole as Desforges and Brownridge also made the long run on day 2 and win with 22 ½ lbs of smallmouth. DAMN SMALLMOUTH!!

Legacy, I wouldn't read too much into something that I or anyone else for that matter might say to someone else without knowing the full details behind their comments. The individual that I made that comment to is always telling me to smile when I believe that I do so more than most people. It is more of a running joke between him & myself.

Was I thrilled about not winning? No and I don't believe that anybody who is a fierce competitor should be. Was I happy that Bob & Derek won? Absolutely, as they are great fishermen & people. I'm proud to call them and class people like Jeff, friends. Was I happy to be fishing on a great fisheries in a wonderfully run event against so many great competitors? You can bet your bottom dollar that I was!

Pete, Margo and all the crew that put on the Quinte Series should be congratulated for their superb efforts in running a class event. This series has many anglers who I personally consider top rate and many up coming young stars. I won't mention names as I wouldn't want to give any of them swelled heads

Rocket, as for the problems with the Smallies health, the Bay water temp at this time of year is not much different from the Lake water temp. so I don't believe that there should be a problem. Also the Largemouth weights having been growing and I do believe that they will keep growing. Witness Curtis Richardson & Wayne Misslebrook's 21.9 lbs. on Sat. and Rob Paterson & Mark Bruce's winning weight from the previous tournament of 22.3 lbs. Jeff Kerr and his partner Codie Lonsberry proved that you don't have to run far to have a great weight as they fished within sight of the ramp all weekend long. The Quinte Series is growing and maybe some people don't want to see that happen but I do believe that most of the anglers in the Series want to see it grow.

Everyone who tournament fishes should try and learn to adapt and grow as fishermen so that they can challenge for that first place prize. We can't always fish the way we want to or are used to and expect to win. To all the great folks, Pete & Margo and my many friends down Quinte way, thanks for a great time and some fierce competition. We'll look forward to seeing you all again real soon!
