I can't believe someone would do this......and so close to home :x

Toronto man says he and friends attacked while fishing near Kingston
The Canadian Press
Sun 30 Sep 2007
Section: Quebec-Ontario Regional General News

TORONTO _ An east-end man says a trip with some friends to a lucky fishing spot near a bridge in eastern Ontario brought him face to face with a man wielding an axe, screaming at him to ``go home.''

``It was like a tiger attacking a goat,'' Jinxin Wang said.

Wang, 47, had set off on a fishing trip last Friday night with two buddies.

Recent media reports about attacks on Asian fishermen, where they are sometimes thrown over a bridge along with their equipment, did not deter them.

Wang said he was unaware that York Region police had launched a hate-crime investigation last Thursday into four incidents near Lake Simcoe.

For two months, August and September, the crappie are plentiful in the rivers and streams of Ontario.

Fishing aficionados like Wang angle from night till dawn, when these fish bite the most.

Since crappie are available mostly frozen, bringing home a fresh one is a delight.

Wang took his friends to a spot near Westport, about 45 minutes north of Kingston, that yielded at least a dozen crappie two years ago.

They checked to see if there were any No Fishing signs on the bridge.

When a white pickup truck slowed on the bridge and a woman told the group to go away because it was not a fishing site, the party moved under the bridge.

Less than 10 minutes later, they said they heard someone swearing loudly and telling them ``No fishing, go home.''

There were four men and two dogs, he said. They carried axes and baseball bats. Wang said one stepped up to him and swung the axe within a few centimetres of his face.

``If we didn't go, I knew we would be attacked,'' Wang said.

So, without a word, they said they walked to the car while the men made loud chopping noises on the bridge while ``swearing, shouting and yelling'' at them.

While two of his friends wanted to call the police, a terrified Wang refused.

``I did not want to make trouble for myself,'' he said.

CBC Radio carried a story this morning with the president of the Chinese Fishing Assoc about the Rice Lake/Scugog Lake attacks on Asians fishing up there.

Appears to be an epidemic.

Sounds like it's starting to get bad. Pretty pathetic lives these people must lead. I may have to start fishing with the Fatman at all times  . Some people really need to get a life :!:

That sounds Horrifying. Discrimination is a terrible thing. Not sure if this sheds any light on what possible started town folks saying no fishing, but in Westport on #10 on the north-west side of the bridge is a year round fishing santuary. I used to go there when I was younger and feed bread to the huge largemouth. Even if this was the case, axes and bats????? In Westport??? Its like sleepy hollow. Thats sad to see.

I was thnking of the sanctuary too and that may have been where they were. Even so, if they went under the bridge, that is the other side that is not protected. 8O

I've been hearing more and more roughness coming out of the Westport area. Friends of mine owned a prominent downtown property and a business there.

The locals seemed rather annoyed with the tourists and maybe this time of year, they've had enough. Either way, this is unacceptable and horrifying to even think of.

The sad thing is that they always mention Kingston in those news. I am Chinese and reside in Kingston (hi, legacy, I met you near the power plant once). Now I am spending sometime in Toronto. My friends here have all asked me what is going on in Kingston. They know I like fishing and are worried that I might get attacked sometime.

Although it happened near Westport, it sure has done some damage to Kingston's reputation.

I heard more of this on the radio this morning. They're saying that it's been an on-going issue at the fish sanctuary in Westport. Over the last while, many are travelling there from TO to fish the off-limit area and the MNR have been contacted but are doing nothing. The locals are saying they're heading back to TO to sell the fish.

If anyone has seen this sanctuary, the bass in there are incredibly huge. I saw one last year well over 8lbs with a spinner bait stuck in it's mouth.

Either way, violence isn't the answer and having this so close to home and a reality is disheartneing to say the least. The Kingston area is a great and beautiful place. The last thing we need is more controversy

Homer....good to hear you're still around. It's coming to that time of year again to be at the Hydro Plant. Maybe I'll see you down there again. Hope the fly-fishing has worked out :)

Cheers

I read a story in the TO Sun about this on Tuesday and there was never any mention of bats or axes,it does seem their fishing gear was tossed into the water and a fisherman as well. Im not saying these guys are the ones but I gathered from the article that people have been fishing in this sanctuary and have been warned not to,some have said they cant read english and didnt know they couldnt fish there and there are supposedly many signs as well as a no fishing logo with a big line thru it (like ghostbusters) but some continue to fish there anyway. It also said some go fishing there and later at night a truck comes up,loads up with fish the fisherman have caught and then they head to toronto to sell it.
I agree there should be no violence at all but I also see how some are really pissed at this and are taking matters into their hands, they have given numerous warnings to the fisherman and they still fish there, signs are all over although apparently some have been removed,if so why and by who?
If you get a chance there is a full page story in the Sun about this you should read it.

The best way to prevent illegal fishing is to catch those who do and make them pay a heavy fine, or even some jail time.

Possibly a way to get these people would be to take pictures of those individuals illegally fishing and the truck that is supposedly hauling away the fish?

Maybe the authorities are too busy combing the fields for pot in Westport and can't find the time to attempt to rectify this situation until it gets even more out of hand. :x

If they're authoratative presence is known, the chances are the culprits won't return.

Homer...I have the same problem. Maybe I should be on the ice with my fly-rod....less trees and people to catch.

As always the media is telling one side of the story, I dont think throwing anyone off of piers is the way to go,but anyone who fishes on a regular bases sees the infractions more and more all the time, with over harvesting, out of season catches, and all the garbage that is left behind, is it just the asians, no, but the majority is, anyone who doesnt believe that just go down to almost every location where shore fishing is avalible and see how maqny asians compared to others are there, the MNR has no CO,s out controlling any of this and I myself have called the tips line more than once, and no one even showed up.

The president of the asianfishing ass. was interviewed and asked about the concerns about asians over harvesting and keeping every thing they catch and out of season catches, and what a surprise, he has never heard of any of this.

Folks complain about how hard it is to find access to lakes for fishing, well if you owned the property and saw all the garbage let behind and other infractions would you continue to let people in,I can see the day when there will be no access on foot at all.

And all the stories that are being put out are all from one side, and of course, now Canada in a hot bed of racisim (what a crock) maybe the asianfishing community should be policing its self and this problem with solve its self, anyone who cares at all about what is happening in this province doesnt care what color the guy doing these things is, if a white guy has buckets full of undersize fish, or is catching fish out of season andkeeping them I would feel the same way, but when its asians (not all) over and over and over again, and no one sees anything being done about it, folks are gona get pissed sooner or later. So maybe the media should write about the cause of the frustration, not just a one sided story.
