How to dress and what to eat?

Planning to go out during November. What should I wear to keep warm? What kind of food will keep me warm? I heard that being out on water is much colder than land. Does a space heater do any good in an open boat? Is there a way to harness the heat from my outboard to warm me up? Perhaps redirect the exhaust? What kind of thoughts will keep me cosy? When will I know that I have been out in the cold too long? Is there any chance that I can be rescued alive if I fall overboard?

The smartest thing you can do is buy a survival suit. I ordered mine out of england although I think the company is from sweden that makes mine. Not as pricey as mustang but all of the quality. I love it. I bought the 2 piece so if it gets warm i can shed either the jacket or bibs. It was one of the greatest investments I made for sure. It doesnt guaruntee you will be rescued alive if an unfortunate slip happens but it definately increases your chances dramatically. Hopefully you have a vhf radio and or cell phone as well. It's always a good ideal to let someone close to you know where you plan on fishing as well. As far as food, I have no clue. Obviously alcohol thins the blood so than might not be your best bet. survival suit is the best thing to keep you both warm and safe. If you don't have one on Quinte, changes are you'll also be checked by MNR. Good luck.

Are you saying that wearing one will cause less hassle by them?

Before I had the suit, they actually told me I should get one for safety reasons which I totally agree. They also said, that when they see guys/gals wearing the suits from far away, they will usually not stop. Most of the times they stop by is for safety reasons. So yes, if you have a suit, you may have less hassle.

I totally agree with this statement, I was pulled over by te police and the ministry years ago, they both strongly suggested I wear a survival suit, I bough the suit and have no visits since.

How long did it take to get the suit from the UK? and did you buy the underwear also?

Hmmmmm....I can understand them suggesting to get one for sure.

It's the not stopping part. They're around to monitor and make sure the law is followed not make sure you're dressed properly. :wink:

I have a float coat but will have to get a full suite....not that I break the law; just don't care to have idle chat with them at times and for some reason, they always make me feel guilty

Hey Stanley,

Wiggler and I just got coats from West Marine in Kingston. They're bright yellow Mustangs and because they're last years models they gave us 40% off!!! Not sure if they still have them in stock but might be worth a call to check.

We just need the pants to go with 'em.

Just did a mock order for a £50 jacket and the shipping to canada was £80 or about $160.

Might be worth it to get a bulk order, but not sure if that would increase the shipping as well.......

It took about a week and a half to get the suit. The thingt is great. extremely warm. I would suggest buying the underwear too. I havent needed it, but i wish i would have gotten it. I even last summer jumped into a lake with mine on just to see the bouyancy. I wanted to take a nap . :lol:

They are well worth the money guys. I'll be wearing mine tomorrow up on the bay. Let me see if i can get a pic up

I'm pretty sure I've posted this before, but it's a bit of information that I feel is very important.

A few years ago I was accompanying Coast Guard searchers looking for a lost duck hunter on Lake Ontario. I complained that I'd bought my survival suit too small and had limited movement. The officer pointed out the primary purpose of the suit was survival in the water and that the tighter it could be worn the less water got next to the body and the longer you would last in the water. His point was, determine the range of motion you require for your activity on the water and buy the suit that allows that range, no more. His other point was the one piece suit is far better for survival as it limits the water next to your body while the two piece will bell when your in the water and will not give the hypothermia protection of the one piece.

I guess the most important thing to remember is wear what you've got, hypothermia can set in in July, you won't last long in the water during the late fall, early winter eyehunt without some protection.
