I was going to post this in another thread but figured it would not get answered due to the amount of posts on it.

I'm heading to the Kingston area next weekend and am planning on fishing some tribs one day and eyes the next.

As for jigging for eyes, what type of structure should I be looking for this time and year and in what depths? I really have no clue where I'm going on the BOQ so at least if I know what to look for it would be a start.

If anybody respondes with some info thank you, if not, i guess i'm SOL.

JFish

While it's not my cup of tea, I understand that the people jigging often do their fishing in some of the deep holes.

I have no idea what others would do or where they would jig.

Perhaps, one of the jig-fishers will respond.

Stay Tuned

The main areas you will be looking for are the deep holes during the day. The fisherman that come in to my place are telling me that they are using anything from a jig with a minnow and jigging spoons such as Hopkins smoothies and Swedish pimples tipped with a minnow. The spoons are producing the best results. We have a few good spots in Belleville and Trenton area. In Belleville under the bay bridge and rush bar have been producing quite good lately. The Trent River has just picked up. The mouth of the river and under the Dundas St. bridge on the west side has been good.
Hopefully this helps…….. Ron

Hey JFish,

Both Ron and Dave are right. You are looking for transition points...these are spots that go from medium depth to pretty deep i.e. 25' to 45' or 35' to 60'. This is why most of the large bridges in the Bay are great for jigging. There are numerous GREAT jigging spost througout the Bay...my favorites are closer to Long Reach though. One of the most famous spots is from Thompsons PT to Shermans Pt. The colder the better, this pushes the active fish to the bottom and creates a perfect scenario to jig.

The KEY, is to always stay on bottom. If you are off bottom you will not be targeting the active (Jig) fish. If you are fishing in heavier winds try to use a drift sock, this will slow you down allowing your bait to keep contact with bottom. If you find that you are not staying on bottom, go to a heavier jig (even a 1oz). I always tip my jigging spoons or Jigs with Gulp 3" Minnow, no need for live minnows any more (Sorry Bait Dealers). Gulp WAY out produces minnows and stays on alot longer.

Good Luck.

Cheers, Hodgey

Hi Hodgey,
Thanks for the great jigging tips, what is the best Gulp minnow colour, Black Shad, Pearl Shad or Smelt shad.
Regards,

Desi

My fav is the Smelt, however I also use the chartruece and white when the water is a bit stained.

Good luck.

Cheers, Hodgey

The Gulp Leeches, Brown and Black both have there place for jigging on the Bay. We used them last year and did quite well, you rig them on Jigs and Jigging Spoons the same way. We ended up being most productive with Leeches when the Walleye had seen the minnows for a few hours, a new 'LOOK' was what they were looking for.

So I would use the Leeches to back up your Gulp Minnows, if neccesary. However, they do not produce as well as the 3" minnow.

Cheers, Hodgey
