Weight and lure depth

Hey guys. I am heading up next weekend from Waterloo with my dad for our annual trip and will give a post when I return. I have a variety of the deep diving Reef Runners and run my boat in the 1.5 - 2.0 mph range, with in-line planer boards. I use standard line. If I have a decent amount of line out, I assume I am probably trolling at around a depth of 20 ft. If I add about an ounce of weight, would I drop around 10ft to 30 ft?? How much weight would you suggest to get to 35 or 40 ft? One of my biggest challenges each year is that I am constantly second guessing my lure depth. Any thoughts on this topic would be appreciated. Honestly, the best thing to do is pick up a copy of the Precision Trolling Guide. It gives the depths of most crankbaits based on the line diameter and length of line out. Most deep diving cranks go down 20' to 38'. If 1oz of weight is added you gain 1/3 addition depth.

That book is the greatest thing since sliced bread. i bet sam has them or can get them

Try using a braided line in around the 15 lbs mark. The thin diameter will get you lures down deeper. Your trolling speed will have a factor as well.

If I am correct, I believe that I have read that on a standard crank bait without any weight (snap weights, etc.), speed is not as much of a factor for lure depth than one might think. I think that this was stated in the precision trolling manual as well if I am correct. I'll dig it out and check into it. As stated, the precision trolling manual is a great resource.
