Quinte Fishing

We fish out of a 15ft Legend with a 25. According to the speedometer on the fishfinder we can troll anywhere from 1-2ish mph depending on which way the wind is blowing.

Well there are a few things you can do. First of all if you buy a drift sock, go with the biggest you can find. You will regret it if you dont. You can also use 5 gallon buckets, they work well. get 2 of them , drill a hole in the bottom of each maybe a couple quarter size holes in the bottom of each. Then take just eough rope to each and drop them off the side. Use your judgement so they wont be in the way of fighting fish. The holes make it alot easier o pull up if you need to get them out of the way to land that double digit. There is also a device that will give you a very accuarate speed. I'll include the link. There are days I wish i had one on my boat even with my gps. I took a perfectly flat glass like day and i dropped one of my downrigger balls down 10ft. I made sure the gps speed was 2.0 mph. I then measured the angle of the downrigger cable off the boom so that if for some reason the gps isnt working i have a backup. I hope some of this helps you. I have a minn kota sock and harness. I bought it from Canadian tire. The harness is nice as it has a float attached that allows it a float if you lose it overboard. The minn kota socks have a yellow strap that makes bringing them back to the boat easy. The yellow strap is attached to the small end of the sock. When you pull on the yellow strap it forces the sock to collapse. Im not sure if other brands have this feature? They work very well at slowing down the boat. In a smaller boat im sure they will help to keep you from blowing sideways in the wind.
