Hey guys. When wanting to get your lure down a bit deeper when trolling, what kind of weights to you recommend? Best to use snap-on weights from Off Shore or is there a better product/method?? Over the past few years, I have noticed that I haven't produced the same number of fish as many other boats around me when I am trolling with weight and fishing in a little deeper water (and knowing that other guys are also using some weight). I have had my weight up close to the lure - 4-5 feet back or so - and I think that might be causing the lure to swim in an unnatural pattern. Thoughts?? For any guys that have success when using weight, thanks for any help that you can provide!

I have the Church Tackle Snap Weight Kit, but also have the red Offshore clips. I personally like the Red Offshore clips better than the Church ones as the "tooth" in them keeps them from coming off of your line and loosing the weight. So I am using the Red Offshore clip with Church weights. There are a few different methods of determining your depth. One of which is listed right in the kit on the Church kit and the other that I use is in the Precision Trolling Manual. The weight is much further away from your bait than what you are mentioning. I think that snap weights are a great tool myself.

Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it. Does anyone locally (in and around Quinte or Toronto area - I am from Waterloo) stock the Off Shore clips and other Off Shore parts? I already use the planer boards and the heavier OR clip that I bought in a kit with weights, but at that time I couldn't find anyone local selling individual parts and now I could use some. Thanks once again.

I don't know what brand of snap-on weights I use, but I think your mistake was putting them too close to the lure. It's a bit of "by guess and by golly" how far to space them, and how deep each lure goes with the various weights and lead lengths, but running leads of 150-200' beyond your planer board, with the snap weight about halfway down the line, is typical.

We should get Italo from Canadian Sportfishing out there with his scuba gear, watching each lure as it swims by and telling us how deep it goes with each weight.

Then he can also teach us how to snag whitefish up in the Trent River, or how to catch walleyes on jigs in Kaganiagami Lake, put them in a fish corral, and then have his diver put them on the lures they are promoting.
