Well, we finally visited Carra's on Wednesday in search of minnows for ice fishing in the north Kawarthas region. His shop is super easy to get to, something like two minutes south of the 401. Sam gave us great service, and the minnows held up well. I was a little surprised he didn't have heavy duty plastic bags and oxygen, though - perhaps consideration for the future?

But what you guys gotta know is he has KILLER DEALS on the KILLER LURES. You name the lure, he's got 'em, and the prices are damn good. All your favourite crankbaits for like $6.99 and $7.99 as I recall, Sam can tell you exactly. The kinds and the colours you want, he's got 'em all pretty much.

Sam's prices are substantially less than what you pay in Toronto or Oshawa, that's for damn sure. I was mightily impressed.

He's got lots of other stuff on sale, too - I picked up a beauty pair of zip-off pants for summertime canoe tripping, and was tempted by his on-sale Goretex boots, though I think I can get another season out of mine. Plenty of other great deals, too, so be there or be square.

Christmas is coming - send in your wives [if you are fortunate, or unfortunate, enough to have one] along with your Wish List.

Cheers,
Pete

P.S. Six walleyes on BOQ, nothing up north ice fishing. Shoulda stayed....

I thought there was a place on this site for "advertising" of businesses.

Ya there is.... And they pay for it..... so they can advertise anywhere.....

BTW, Pete was just spreading the word to inform other anglers of great deals.... He does not work for, nor is paid by Carra's.......

On a side note, do a little research, the subject has come up in the past and has been resolved.

And here's some more advertising.

When Carra's first opened I needed a pair of boots ASAP and we found a manufacturers flaw in the boots I wanted. I was told to buy the boots, use em, and after I was finished, bring them back and they would be replaced. I was kinda leary of this as the store was new in town, but I needed boots, so I did it anyway.

So.... one year later I show up to talk about getting my "flawed" boots replaced. However, I didn't have the boots with me, and was told they no longer make this model, so they were replaced with a more expensive, better quality boot right on the spot. I said I would bring the flawed ones back, and was told if I could get any use at all out of them, to keep them, as they would just be thrown out.

Customer service beats price any day!!

Your terminology for "spreading the word on good deals" is advertising. You don't need to get your scales flared, only pointing out that the site is best for discussion on fishing ... that there is a location on the site for advertising of companies who market to us fisherman. I can attest to some great deals and work that Skevy's has provided folks ... just want to be respectful of other anglers to make their own choices.

Classy Sam - as always!
No disrespect to Ron ( have never met the gentleman ) but my dealings with Sam have all been positive experiences.

Maybe that's how you perceive it, but if you want to get technical, you may wish to look up the term advertising. You will see many different explanations of it but many include the terms "persuasive", "informative", "influence", "paid" etc.
That is the same way I perceive it.... But anyway....... If I hear that this Pete guy (no I don't know him) was paid by Carra's, or is in some kind of partnership, I'll also consider it advertising... I don't think the pete lad is trying to "persuade" or "influence" anyone to shop at Carra's. Simply one fisherman helping out others!

Regardless of whether you or I consider it to be advertising, advertising is allowed in this forum. If you followed the board more closely, you would see that the topic has been brought up in the past. And it was OK'ed by the site administrator to advertise in the main forum. Read here.

Both Carra's and Skevy's Pay to advertise here advertise here and it's not really a big deal. It's great that we have 3 outdoors store in the area and I have made purchases at all three stores.

Note: I am in no way affiliated with any of the three local retailers. I go where I can find what I need.

See you on the ice, Cheers!

I wish we had 3 great shops like those in Belleville here in Kingston....even 1 would do.

So the way I look at it, I'm glad to see the posts with the deals from ANY of them. Even though it's not "local" for me, these are the closest places and I go in when I'm in the area. They are all extremely impressive and everyone top notch to deal with.

If it's too controversial, it might be a thought to have and allow these places 1 major posting per-week with their sales of the week? It seems they're not doing this weekly now and I know I'd like to see it. :)

...either way, I am happy they're around for us. It's a hard market and I for one love every minute I get being around sporting stores and knowing they have the information I need and are as helpful as they are.

Cheers

To some who have taken a bit of offense to my posts, tis the season to model peace and harmony. In light of that, may you all have a blessed Christmas or Hannukah. Be safe on the ice and remember to practice catch-and-release.

I'm a salesman, and I make my living my selling financial products like life insurance and and funds and RRSP's. I work hard to shop the market and make sure my clients get the best possible produce and service for their money, and they return the favour by referring their friends and keeping their business with me. [I must be doing something right, cuz I sure go fishing and caving and climbing a lot, eh?]

Unfortunately, in retail sales a lot of businesses seem to forget the basic. It irks me to no end when some retailer seems to infer that it is a "privelege" for me to do business with him! Needless to say, I do not return.

Some retailers "get it", and some do not. And some retailers REALLY get it, and stand out above the others, and this is how I felt when I went to Sam's. So I thought I'd share the good news.

I appreciate Sam's support of this website [and the other guys, too!] who with their advertising support this place, and make it free for me and everyone else to use, and get the information we need to catch more fish. And I'm always happy to put in the good word for someone [like Sam] who gives me great service, and great products at great prices.

Here's hoping for a "green" and open-water Christmas!

Cheers,
Pete
