Given our long and ongoing winter, unless matters change drastically the water will be cool/cold during the tournament on May 3rd Pike/Walleye.

Can anyone offer an amatuer fisherman who gets out on occasion (but not as much as he would like) some tips on how fishing odds can be improved for Pike/Walleye in Cool/Cold early May water? Is it true that running crankbaits at high speed is not a good technique this time of year and the presentation should be much slower given the fish's metabolism-or is this myth? ie go with artificial or focus on live bait presentations on a vertical plane. Does Trolling make any sense?

Thanks

You can't go wrong with suspending Husky Jerks for pike when their lethargic. As soon as the lure hits the water give it a few cranks then pause, sometimes I wait up to 10 secs then I give it a few more cranks and pause again.

You really have to have patience but I have had many pike just slam into it when its paused. If you know a spot that produce pike at that time of the year you can start off with the Husky, but if you don’t know the water use a spinner bait (white seems to work for me) to get some pike follows first, then throw out the Husky.
