Fishing line

I,ve been following this discussion board for a few weeks and find the information interesting and useful. My question is, what types and brands of line do you use for walleye and pike in the Bay of Quinte? Last year I trolled with 14# fireline, jiged with 8# vanish and used 6# & 8# excalibur for all other applications. I did not like vanish on spinning reel, but it's good for leaders. Any power pro users? Can you cast with this line using a low profile bait caster. Will anyone be using Spider Stealth?

Power Pro...Can Cast with baiter casters? -> Yes. Power Pro was designed for bass fishing which mainly use bait casters.

Trolling -> Power Pro, Fireline, Tuf Line - Braided line works good. Any pound test is good but you should have a mono leader so the Walleye don't shy away from the line. 8lb is good.

Jigging -> 6 - 8lb mono is good. Can use braided line as well but again need a leader for the Walleye

Pike -> Braid line, no mono leader but maybe a wire leader.

John,I use Power Pro on my Abu Garcia about 20# test,with a 6" wire leader. On my Catalyst PTi, I use 10# test S/T excalibur with a swivel.I tried P/Pro on my spin reel doesn't work as nice as mono.Over the years of fishing the Bay, anything will hit you from walleye,pike,sheephead & channel cats.It's better to be a little heavy than light and one more thing I found don't go to cheap on line & leaders there's nothing worst than losing a nice one at the boat.YOU CAN'T PUT A PRICE ON RECREATION ps This is just my opinion tdoug

Thanks for your input. With different lines being introduced every year it's hard to decide to stay with what worked last year or try new. Was hoping to have Superdad's input on this.

Hey John,

Tuf Line is a great super line, I find that when running palner boards however 14# to 17# is about the best. I prefer Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Berkely Big Game. As far as leaders go, spend the money and go titanium for pike, and try flourocarbon leaders with the braid when jigging for walleye's.

I use mono line on all reels, 6 lb on ultra lites, 10 lb on baiting casting and heavy spinning and 10 lb on the line counter trolling reels.

We hear all kinds of stories about the lines and the difference they make, I believe that if you have confidence in your tackle, you'll do well.

I tried the Spider wire when it first came out and didn't like the dye coming out and couldn't get used to its feel. The rod and reel flipped out of the boat one day and I hardly cried at all.

Three weeks and a couple days.

6lb. SilverThread. Have tried a whole bunch of other stuff, but still like the silverthread. Stren Magnathin aint bad, but I don't seek it out.

6lb on everything, clear water.......4lb. leader on a sampo swivel (little fella).

Didn't mind the spiderwire, nice to jig with, but still need a mono leader with a swivel.

I don't know it it's just me, but they all look the same, but with fancier and fancier packages. (OOOOhhhh, look at this one)

Tip: When buying line, especially at this time of year, open the box, pull of a couple feet, tie a simple single knot and reef.....if the line breaks (cuts itself), it's toast.

Another telltale sign of restocking the shelves after a long winter in the back storage room of the local retailer is DUST on the box.

Avoid.
