Hello and good day,

What advice could someone give a novice fisherman as far a picking up some lures / tackle for spring walleye? I get out on the water a few times a year at best and truely enjoy every moment of it as you all probably do. A few friends and I are spending a couple days at Merland Park....we've heard nothing but great things about this lodge. Not sure where we'll be fishing but any tackle tips or tecniques would be greatly appreciated.

Take care,
Bryan

If your are trolling husky jerks and smithwick rogues are good. Colors are a secret. Hint: You see them at the Circus.

Rebel Fasttraks have been good in the past on the Bay. I have stop using them but I am sure they still work.

Good luck,

Mike

You can't go wrong with a jig and minnow. I don't think coulor
matters much [could be wrong] but use just enough weight to
keep a feal for the bottom. Cheap and efficient. Jingles.

Best years I've had opening day have been black ball head jig with mudminnow hooked through mouth and out dorsal. Like previous lad said, just enough to keep contact with bottom. As far as spots, you'll know your on a proven spot when you can hear idle conversation from all the boats around you.

Looks like we've all got our favourites. For me, can't go wrong with a 1/4 oz. black jig head with 3" creme or pink/orange powergrub tipped with a piece of worm or small minnow, slow drifted across areas adjacent to spawning beds. With the cold water this year, live bait will be more important.
