Call Sam at Carra's I believe he was involved with the Napanee derby. He might know. Sorry I personally can't be of any help.

Wow, this question reminded me to do a little research...

I have a news article from the Whig Standard from 1987 that states that it was the 5th Annual Napanee Rod & Gun Club derby. You can do the math here. I think this was the first year for a catch and release program that was officially called the "Let it Live" program.

87 was the first year that myself and a friend participated in the derby and started a hat collection also. Since then a few have worn out but I have "94,'96, '97 and 2000 year hats hanging on my wall. I'am not sure but I think 2000 was the last year, correct me if wrong.

Anyway, the news article states that Picton angler Ron Wilkinson won the derby with a 10.08 lb fish !

Hope this bit of trivia helped !

P.S. Hey BlueDog... I ain't to far from you (Norristown)

I will do my best to answer this as I do not have any records with me and they are at the club with our secretary. It tournament was actually a derby and I believe it got started in 1978. During the first few years there were a couple of years that the derby was not run and there seemed to be a demand to run the derby and the club then got involved in a larger capacity. Len is correct in stating that in 1987 it became a catch and release tournament and the reason for this was the amount of anglers that the tournament was attracting, and we did call it Let It Live Award to get the message out. The last year that I was involved with the tournament was 2001 and I still have a few hats left for the collectors that are interested. The last year of the tournament was 2002 and now we (Napanee District Rod & Gun Club) maintain the weigh in stations in a couple of locations for Kiwanis Walleye World.

Hope this is of help to you.

Regards,
Sam

I wonder if anyone has all the Kiwanis hats for the quinte derby. I got a few I think 7 to be exact from 2000-2007. It shows how this tourny keeps getting more funding year by year tho...... The 2000 hat is something I wore back in little league when I was 6 years old, my fav I think is from 2005 they looked real sharp black and red, was not a big liker actually I will never wear it ever is the hat from last year, the walleye on it looks nothing like a walleye more like a brown fish some kid drew! I think the kiwanis should put out a contest for someone to come up with a hat for them every year, just makes it that more interesting!
