Quinte Fishing

my son is out of school next week for march break and said Id take him perch fishing,now Ive ever gone before have no idea where to go though I heard simcoe is the place to be (cooks bay--beaverton--sutton etc)
Im from lake scugog area so is that the best place to go OR is there somewhere on BOQ to go?
I want him to catch fish no matter what size,also I hear of guys catching 70-100 a time on simcoe .what do they use for bait? because thats a ton of minnows to go thru isnt it?? does anyone have worms at this time of year,I think wal mart has some in actually near me but not sure I will check

Simcoe is a perch factory. And I would suggest using smallier emerald shiners or mudders. Use small micro jigs and smaller jigs and if they dont want small stuff beef it up a little.

millions of perch in quinte,just about any shore line will hold perch,herchamer(spelling maybe wrong lol) has good perch a few 100 yards out from shore and so does point anne,sounds like fun to me im going out after this snow there calling for .

Ok, wait a second...If Perch are still open on Quinte, then what stops guys from fishing for Walleye and SAYING they are fishing for Perch????

Hodgey: This was a topic last year, and one I brought up w/ Hardwater when we were there. I know the season is closed on walleye, but boy the temptation seems pretty high. And, how about those folks that don't know the season is closed on the eyes ... takin a chance, I know, but again ... how does the OPP police this?

Wow, upon further review of the Regs, you can actually fish for the following fish on the Bay of Quinte right now:

Pike – Open until March 31st
Perch/Sunfish - All year
Crappie - All year
Channel Cat - All year
Whitefish - All year
And even Lakers if you can find them.

This is just insane...How the heck can any MNR CO actually determine that you are fishing for Walleye Vs Pike or Perch? It's pretty much the same tackle used. Now, it's a no brainer if someone was to keep Walleye, however if your out to Catch & Release...You can't be touched.

5 yrs ago or so hardwater and i used to fish Trenton for perch after the waleyes closed seeing as how the perch don't close! according to Ron at Skevy's there were about 10 or so charged on Sunday with walleyes on them while taking off their huts. i'm glad that some of my hard earned tax dollars are being spent to catch those who try to abuse our fisheries! heres a question for you all... if you were to go out and actually target walleye even if you plan on releasing them and the ministry came by and decided to charge you who's going to pay for your legal costs???? oh by the way Hodgey say hi to Mark for me he showed on Thursday what kind of a fisherman he is... meaning he is a great angler, very knowledgeable and a great guy!!!
as for the perch on the bay you are better off going to Simcoe to fish for them there seeing as the chances of you catching more and bigger ones are increased on Simcoe!!!!

I dont see a problem with this. If you are making an honest effort to target a legal game fish and you incidently catch a walleye and its release then you have broken absolutly no law.

If you want to take your theory to the extreme then we shouldnt be fishing on the soft water until the end of june when bass season starts, because you may catch bass in the early walleye season. The bass season is closed all winter, so we had better not fish for walleye since we may incidently catch a bass . . . . do you see where im going with this?

This happends with many game fish on many different lakes depending on their season. Bass, Walleye, Steelhead, Whitefish. As long as you are attempting to catch fish that are in season and not keeping anything out of season I don't see anything wrong with that. There is nothing that really can be done except close the whole lake or area but that probably will never happen in most areas.

I see your point, however they close Rice Lake all winter and Scugog on Mar 1st, so don't say it's impossible. Also, why not...it's not like the Bay of Quinte is even comparable to Simcoe for Perch anyway. This would just close the whole loop on trying to police it.

The problem I have with the regs is that anglers could go out this Saturday and fish at Shemans Pt and catch Walleye all day with NO pressure from anyone else. As long as you say your fishing for Perch or Pike and don't keep any Walleye.

It just makes for a very frustrating fishery...How the HELL do they police that??

I would think that a CO would have good enough judgement too, if he was out checking somone after walleye closes in the winter. if a person is jigging a swedish pimple tipped with a minnow head he probably isnt fishing for pike. But if a guy is sitting thier with an 8 inch sucker minnnow on the end of his line he probably is!

This 'issue' is not unique to just quinte, its like that on most lakes! The other option is to close the season all together in the winter . . . doubt this would happen, and i wouldnt like if it did, we cant have the cake and eat it too!

For years the way i would read the regs i thought the whole bay was closed on the last day of febuary making it a fish sancuary. and no fishing was allowed cause the waters were closed. and i was told i was wrong it was just the mouths of the rivers not the bay.......... i feel if the MRN wanted too thats just what they could do, shut the bay down from the ferry on in draw a line, and close it just like as if it were a small lake. then if yer cought out there you would get yer ticket its just that simple..... you can target any fish, i dont think the law says you cant fish more so its saying you cant keep a fish out of season.... we as good fishemen do not fish spawn beds of bass just to catch them when they are out of season. could you get a fine, i doubt it carry that fish in or put it on a stringer, or in a live well you will be fined and it should I might add be a very steep fine you are stealing a fish

I can't believe we are going over this again this year.If people want to take this stance on ice fishing then it should be taken on the soft water season as well.Meaning that no season is open till the end of June.What a stink that would cause.The people that head out "perch fishing" to actually target walleyes are the same people that are "pike" fishing for bass on their spawning beds at the end of May.Many people (myself included) go for perch on the bay after walleye closes.I take my kids out at least once before the ice goes out every year.We use 3 pound test line and ultra lite gear and fish during midday.That is perch fishing.If the MNR check a guy out and he is using heavy line , heavy gear and is fishing at low lite times then they have cause for search,sezier and further investigation.Please don't assume everyone is guilty and punish all buy closing a ligitament season just cause the temptaion is there.I have yet to catch a walleye while perch fishing after the season is closed but I also target different spots for last ice perch.I do nail the odd pike but they are open till the end of the month and 3 pound p-line is good but not that good.

Next they will want to shut down all beer stores cause a few are still tempted to drink and drive!

Sorry Legend I just clued in that your thread has been highjacked.To answer your actual post I would go to Simcoe.The perch fishing on the bay gets better and better every year but it still is not as good as Simcoe.That place is just a awsome perch factory.If you do come down to the bay , let me know and I might be able to point you in the right direction.My favorite perch rig is a perch coloured jigging rapala with a 6 -8 inch dropper and a small minnow.
