Quinte Fishing

Just poured thru the diatribe called "Check out this new Picture" and guess what it's the same stuff that dragged out each year at this time.

Lat year we had a flame war with a native from the area and everyone got their shorts tied up in a knot, just before fishing season.

It used to be the end of February was the time for Cabin-Fever, guess it's changed.

From a realist point of view, there appears very little that can be done as the law is quite clear as what is allowed and what isn't allowed. The depleted MNR staff (read ALL Prov. Dept) haven't the resources to fulfill the mandate in a proper manner.

So, who do we blame? Anyone near the river, race or color notwithstanding.

This continual blasting from the hip just inflames people and continues the verbage that is not decent and should be stopped.

CALM DOWN, the season is three darned days away, there's no point taking rage and bad vibes on the water. Leave them on shore.

Sorry for the venting, but enough is enough. Read and review your posts before you fire them off - second thoughts are good.

What's going on (in its entirety) along the shores of the BOQ tributaries isn't legal, logical or moral, regardless who is doing it. Doing nothing about it except burying our heads in the sand (accepting the status quo) isn't a responsible approach.

But yelling and screaming at internet board readers won't solve the problem, especially when the race card is played.

That's all I'll have to say about this, I have to go and get ready for the fishing season on Saturday AM.

David, I'm a little surprised at your reaction to what's taking place around the BOQ. If you were looking deep enough inside the posts, you would understand we're not just talking about a few Native people exercising a constitutional right to spear some fish. That is an annual debate.
But, there are hordes of non-sport fisherman taking advantage of the lack of CO presence down there to illegally harvest walleye from right under the noses of local authorities, in Sanctuaries, laying waste to countless numbers of fish and their ability to spawn.
That is just plain unacceptable, and ignoring the situation will only increase the likelihood of this behaviour spreading. I believe in looking at the brightside too, but I applaud the fact some people are getting emotional about this. Yes, we should control the emotional side of this debacle, but underneath is a horrible abuse of a fragile fishery. Precisely why I've suggested there must be some room for cooperation, and increased enforcement. I have been discussing on the FishOntario website that we should try to convince the MNR to further enact a program allowing guardians of the fishery, trained volunteers (they're out there, trust me) to patrol the waterways and enforce the regulations. If they refuse, which they might, it will further enforce the belief of many, they haven't a clue what they're doing. We are going to explore this.
Thank you though for a voice of reason, calling for calm and I too, am looking forward to the opener this weekend, and another season of great fishing down there.

For the last twevle years I have been privilaged to spend time in Canada in the Bay of Quinte fishing for walleyes with a group of guys from New York. We have always enjoyed ourselves over that time and yes some years were better than others. The last three or four years I have spent alot of time viewing this site and have enjoyed alot of what goes on here. Dan you do a great job. A common theme each year is the poaching that occurs be it preseason slaughter or in season cheating! The in season cheating you have to monitor what you can the old fashion way with spot checks, etc. The preseason slaughter however may dictate a new approach. One where the MNR can expand it's reach more directly on the Bay by utilizing a 'volunteer' workforce. No one would be paid. It would be made up of volunteers, selected in a myriad of ways, to monitor the main spawning areas where these slaughters occur. Videotape is a great detourant when you know you can be convicted by it. We're talking about two to three weeks of 'neighborhood watch' if you will. You have to be careful with the enforcement issues by volunteers but hopefully the MNR would provide the legal enforcement support needed to see a project like this through. Think about it. Increased workforce, willing to work for no pay for a couple of weeks? Of course you'd have to have volunteers lined up and bonafide supporters of making sure the fish spawn and not massacred. Anyways just an idea. Good luck to all.
