As usual went for a coffee this morning around the table boat insurance came up. One fellow said you have to have boat insurance and proof of it on the boat in case you are checked by the OPP and claimed he knew of someone who was asked by the OPP.

I have insurance, but do not carry on the boat, have been checked out numerous times over the years yet never have been asked to see proof of insurance.

I've looked everywhere the only thing I could find was if you come from United States and have a motor of 10hp or more you have to be insured and carry proof.

Does anyone on here know the law and were I might find this information.

Thanks in advance: Traveller

I'm pretty sure that insurance is not mandatory. A very good idea, but i don't think the law requires it yet.

Boat insurance is not mandatory in Ontario by law. Depends on your insurance company and size of motor and value of boat package, but your boat may be covered on your home policy. When your boat is being towed by your tow vehicle your boat is covered on your auto policy. Other than recovering your boats value upon and accident , you are responsible for your actions and third party liability is a real issue when on the water. I am an insurance agent and can help with any questions or concerns and can provide a free quote. just pm me and I will help.

I recently insured a boat. My agent advised me that if I was in an accident towing the boat, that my truck insurance would cover me from a liabilty standpoint but I would not be covered under this policy for damages to the boat.

Check over your policies carefully, often it is indicated that your boat is NOT covered if on the water after November 01.

You don't need insurance on your boat, What the police will ask and you must have on boat is your ownership, which they will ticket you if not with you.

The only time you need insurance is when your buying a boat with a finance term where your lender wants to be sure that if any thing where to happen they still get there money that is the only case where insurance is mandatory to get a loan.

i work in insurance, (not auto/boat/marine).

it is my understanding while the boat is attached to your vehicle, you "would" actually have physical damage cover from your vehicle attach to the boat/trailer....

i could be wrong, but that was my understanding.

the liability definitely carries over.

In reviewing our boat, motor and trailer insurance renewal, we came upon some points that were news to us and maybe to you too. In case this is of interest:
1. The coverage does not include "on the water" dates of November 30-April 1.
2. The coverage is not for "on-land."
3. The coverage is limited to water within 300 miles of your home port.

____

News to us, a year ago.

Some insurance companies have coverage for the whole year and do not exclude the winter months - I believe that State Farm doesn't exclude the winter months.

Best to check your policy or talk to your insurance rep.
