Subject: Fw: Ontario 's New 13% Harmonized Sales Tax - What It Will Mean To You

Next summer (2010) the Ontario Government is set to put into force its
new harmonized GST/PST sales tax which will apply a 13% sales tax to
everything we purchase.

Things That Were Not Subject To The Current 8% PST Will Be Now Taxed
As a result, things that were not previously taxed under the current Ontario
Provincial Sales Tax (PST) will be taxed at 8%.

The new 13% tax will therefore apply to things like your electric bill, your
gas bill, your water bill, condominium fees, insurance premiums, and every
other good and service you purchase. There are almost no exemptions.

The current Ontario PST tax does not apply to services, nor does it apply to
the purchase of certain goods. The new 13% tax will therefore extend the old
8% PST tax rate to the purchase of all goods and all services.

The New 13% Tax Will Apply To The Purchase of All New Homes
The new harmonized GST/PST will also apply to all purchases of all new homes.
If a person were to purchase a new $1 million dollar home in Toronto , they
would have to pay roughly $200,000 in taxes as a result of the Ontario land
transfer tax, the new city of Toronto land transfer tax, and the new
harmonized 13% GST/PST.

Think about that and what that would do to real estate values in Toronto ..

It will cause property values to fall and kill the new home construction
industry and the jobs it creates.

And it won't be long before you'll hear our elected representatives telling us
that, because of the harm that has been inflicted to the new home
construction industry by the new 13% tax, it would be "fair" to extend the new
13% tax to sales of existing homes.

The New 13% Tax Is An Assault On Your Primary Residence
Canadians have had two things that they have always been able to count on as
being tax free - things that they could use to save money and accumulate
wealth. They are your: (a) primary home; and (b) RRSP. That's it.

The extension of the new 13% GST/PST to homes is simply a tax assault by the
government on your primary home. They want to tax your primary home and you
will suffer because of it.

Why? Because if a purchaser has to pay almost $200,000 in taxes to buy your
$1 million dollar home, the purchaser is going to pay less to you for your
home. The purchaser will reduce the amount he or she is willing to pay to you
in order to pay all the taxes.

The New 13% Tax Will Effectively Raise Your Income Taxes
Currently, the combined Federal/Ontario income tax rates are roughly 25% on
the first $20,000 of taxable income, 42% on the next $40,000 of taxable
income, and 46.5% on each dollar of taxable income over $60,000. On top of
that you have to add the "Fair Share Health Tax" of up to $1,000 each of us
has to pay.

If the Ontario Government gets away with implementing their new harmonized
GST/PST sales tax of 13%, the top effective income tax rates in Ontario will
be as follows (since you can't spend any of your tax paid dollars without
paying the new harmonized 13% GST/PST tax):

38% on the first $20,000
53% on the next $40,000
59.5% on every dollar over $60,000

On top of that, you have to pay your Ontario Fair Share Health Tax, your city
realty taxes, your city garbage fees, your city water fees, your city street
parking permit fees, your annual Ontario and new city of Toronto vehicle
license plate fees, your Ontario land transfer tax, your new city of Toronto
land transfer tax, your gasoline taxes, your liquor taxes, your air departure
taxes, your entertainment taxes, and so on.

OF ALL THE MONEY YOU WORKED HARD TO EARN, WHAT PERCENTAGE ARE YOU REALLY
KEEPING FOR YOUR OWN USE? 25%? 20%? 10%?

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - FIGHT BACK
THIS HAS GOT TO STOP HERE OR WE WILL ALL SOON BE WORKING FULL TIME FOR THE
VARIOUS LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT IN ONTARIO .

YOU CAN ALREADY SEE HOW ARE LIFESTYLES ARE DECLINING BECAUSE OF THE ENORMOUS
TAX LOAD WE BEAR.

AS A RESULT, I URGE YOU TO TAKE THIS ISSUE SERIOUSLY AND TO FILL AND AND SIGN
THE PETITION AT www.unfairtaxgrab.com AGAINST THE NEW HARMONIZED GST/PST
TAX SET OUT BELOW...

I WOULD ALSO ASK YOU TO SEND THIS E-MAIL ON TO OTHERS THAT YOU KNOW AND ASK
THEM TO DO THE SAME.

IF WE DON'T WORK TOGETHER ON THIS ISSUE THE NEW HARMONIZED 13% SALES TAX WILL
BECOME A REALITY NEXT SUMMER.

THANK YOU.

Thousands say "no" to the HST

Dalton McGuinty claims "no one is complaining" about his unfair tax grab. You
proved him wrong this week. On Wednesday we sent out a request asking you to
send a message to the McGuinty Government about the HST. Almost instantly our
email box began to fill. By the end of the day we'd received nearly 2,000
messages.

New Democrat Members of Provincial Parliament did their best to read them
into the record in the Legislature, but they simply ran out of time. The good
news is: there are more debates to come and we'll be sending you details about
how to keep up the fight against this unfair tax grab. In the meantime, you
can read a transcript of the debate here .

Together we can stop the HST.

PS - Urge your friends, family and other concerned citizens to sign the
petition at www.unfairtaxgrab.com . Join the Face book fight back here .

You actually think that this "petition" stuff is going to work in our Democratic society? This is a "done deal", bought and paid for by the Federal Conservatives.

The provincial Conservatives have already stated that if elected, they're not going to repeal it, that's why they walked out of the Legislature over it. They want to *appear* as being opposed, but in reality they're not. Dalton knows he's out after this term, he's not going to get elected again when he's broken every campaign promise he made. The Conservatives know this and have got 'ol Dalton McGuilty to do their dirty work for them. The problem with the "intelligentsia" is their own faith in their own intelligence : they don't think that the unwashed masses are smart enough to possibly figure out any of the higher-level decisions that they might make. We're not smart enough to figure this stuff out.

It'd be a lot easier to swallow if they exempted gasoline and heating fuels, but they won't. Your "Tax Rebate" (read bribe cheque) will cover your added expenses for about the first six months. Dalton McGuilty (never made an election promise he wanted to keep) won't reverse your "Ontario Health Tax", which is payable each year on top of Provincial taxes. The Conservatives might get rid of it, "throw us a bone", so to speak. That's like a mugger taking your wallet with all your money, then feeling sorry for you and giving you a quarter to call someone who cares.

Petition. Are you kidding me? Get real. You might as well start up a petition to repeal the Law of Gravity. It's got as much chance of succeeding as this petition.

Almost every politician used to be a lawyer, when they became as slimy as they could be as lawyers, and couldn't become any slimier, they just move up a notch and became politicians.

The object of posting this Mux wasn't to get every to sign the petition (I know it's a done deal), it was simply to give something easy to read to the people who don't really understand how it will affect them.

I was suprised how 90% of the people I talk to on a daily basis have no idea how this will affect them.

You can sign the petition if you want, it mike make you feel better

I just find it hilarious that all look to the "Opposition" to "protect them from oppression", when in fact the "Opposition" isn't opposed to the HST at all.

They just want someone else to do it instead of them. The Liberals aren't going to get a third term, so what the hell, in "private" consultation with the provincial Conservatives, let's just fire it through.

The average voter hasn't got a clue on almost anything. Most people are stupid, blissfully ignorant and comfortably numb. Sheeple.

If you really want to feel pissed off about it, wait until July and then look at your Hydro bill, there's a small item there called a "debt repayment charge" (this is charged on each monthly bill all across the Province to make up for Ontario Hydro's wonderful decison-making in the past). The "Debt Repayment Charge" will itself be subject to HST. That's like being charged GST on a mortgage, or a car loan. HST will also affect RRIF's, RRSP's, annuities, etc (portfolio management fees are subject to HST).

Don't even get me started on the 407. We paid for it, sold it at a loss, and now pay to use it. We also clean it, salt it, plow it and police it at no cost to a private corporation. That's like finally paying off your mortgage and coming home to find some guy on your doorstep looking for the rent.

Amazing, aint it? But, like I said.........Done Deal. It's great to rage against the machine, but kinda useless when the machine doesn't have the ability to hear.

That 407 deal was cooked up by Harris and his cronies - like Baird - Flaherty and Clements.

IRON solid, unbreakable and unchangeable - what great lawyers the buyers had!!!

You're right on the mark Mux that a petition would llike be throwing mux-urine into the wind.

And as mentioned it was the Federal Tories who pushed for the HST.

Just my .02 cents

One often overlooked fact with the HST is that it is good for business owners.

The 8% PST that is currently none claimable when rolled into HST is now an input tax credit and therefore claimable. So a company that has 100K in expenses will make an extra $8 000 next year. Extrapolate that to huge companies and you get "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer".

In theory there is a benefit to the blue collar worker as it should stimulate the economy and encourage manufacturing and business in Ontario but rarely is theory = practicality.

In theory it should also be mentioned that it should reduce the amount of jobs needed to currently collect and process the dual taxes. But with all this new revenue why would they lay anyone off?

Scott, I run a medium size manufacturing facility (50 - 60 employees).

They can keep the 8%, wages will have to increase much more than we'll ever see from input tax credits.

The bottom line is, this is going to happen and very few people have understanding of how much of an increase this will be on their cost of living.

You do realize that the Provincial tax collectors idled by the harmonization have just been hired by the Federal Government in the same capacity, right?. After all, you wouldn't want a tax that supposedly creates jobs, to actually eliminiate jobs, now would you?

As for economic stimulation, Ontario isn't coming back. Face it. The economic engine of Ontario has been, for decades, the automotive industry and its spin-offs. The "Greening" of Ontario? Gimme a break. Put lipstick on David Suzuki and I still wouldn't bang him. "Green" jobs, yeah right, maybe in about 20 years and it'll come only because they'll keep increasing the excise taxes on fossil fuels until such time that we'll have to go "Green".

Outsourcing. Why pay a Canadian worker when you've got an Indian, a South American or a Chinese to do the labour at a much cheaper rate, with no benefits cost, no payroll taxes and you can repatriate your international profits at a reduced Ontario tax rate?

I think the HST is going to have the exact opposite effect to what we've been told. But then again, I'm not smart enough to figure all this fancy stuff out using my meagre intellect.

"When you're born, if you wanna get circumsized, it's not covered by OHIP and as such the procedure will be subject to HST, when you finally croak, the funeral will be subject to HST, as will estate fees, probate fees, real estate fees, legal fees, etc." Looks like we're surrounded. 8)

How so? Unless the majority of your expenses are currently GST only, I can't see how this won't have a positive revenue stream for you.

My degree is in Biology and Chemistry so I'm not going to pretend to be an Economist or an accountant, and don't get me wrong I'm not for HST but I don't see how for small business it won't slightly increase your bottom line.

I was being facetious for the majority of that post. The only part I genuinely believe is that it will have a positive affect on revenue for most small business. I don't think it will be 8% but it certainly won't be a negative affect. There will be an increase in expenses but for the most part it will be negated by the 8% increase in ITC's.

It will be the everyday working man and woman that will get hit the hardest and I agree no one really knows how hard this is going to hit them. It is very frustrating that everyone sat idle while this was pushed through. You didn't see anyone with petitions until it was a done deal.

I'm a cynic and believe that the biggest short fall in a democratic society is that a genuine democracy relies on an educated public and for the most part we are spoon fed by mainstream media to think and vote however they tell us, so it really isn't a democracy in my opinion.
