Yeah, I know you were being facetious in a surreptitious manner, you sneaky thing, you. 8)

Educated public. Nope. Hence my reference to "sheeple".

That's why the bribe cheques will soothe the masses. I don't think that the sheeple realize that the bribe cheque is a one-time event and not an annual paycheque. The tax breaks in personal income tax that are said to follow probably won't cover the cost of the Health Tax.

Hey, why do you think that when the Consumer Price Index # is calculated, that they leave out the cost of gasoline and food?

The bottom line is, this is going to happen and very few people have understanding of how much of an increase this will be on their cost of living.

I couldn't agree more.

How so? Unless the majority of your expenses are currently GST only, I can't see how this won't have a positive revenue stream for you.

My degree is in Biology and Chemistry so I'm not going to pretend to be an Economist or an accountant, and don't get me wrong I'm not for HST but I don't see how for small business it won't slightly increase your bottom line.

My degree is from the school of hard knocks.

I can tell you that once my employees start to realize the thousands of extra $$$$$ they need to sustain their lifestyle, they will be looking for wage increases.

...and you will have to raise your rates to cover the extra expenses on wages, which in turn will cause your clients to raise their rates...making your employees lives more expensive...which in turn will bring them back to your desk asking for....  round and round she goes where she stops no one knows.

Well, pbot, according to the "guvmint", the implementation of the HST should only result in about a 0.7% increase in annual inflation.

Then, miraculously and magnanimously, all businesses are going to pass on their savings to the consumer, resulting in the overall lowering of retail prices on their respective products/services.

If you want to invest your money wisely in anticipation of this financial event, I have for sale a large, concrete bridge over Telegraph Narrows that I can sell you. It's an attractive structure and it's mine. You can arrange financing for its purchase from Mux Inc., then charge a toll to all who wish to cross it, thus recouping all monies paid to Mux Inc. in no time at all. After that, the gravy is all yours. Act now before I change my mind. 8)

Here is the BS from our Premier!

Earlier this year, you wrote to me expressing your views about Ontario's plan to merge federal and provincial sales taxes into a single HST. I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts on the subject. And I want to take this opportunity to provide you with new information about our tax changes.

A recent report (http://wcmprod2.ucalgary.ca/publicpolic ... 0(Nov%2009).pdf) by Dr. Jack M. Mintz, Palmer Chair in Public Policy at the University of Calgary, studies the impact that our package of tax reforms, including the HST, will have on our economy.

Dr. Mintz's paper indicates that, within 10 years of the July 1, 2010, start of the HST, Ontario will benefit from:

* an estimated 591,000 net new jobs

* increased annual worker incomes of up to 8.8 per cent

* increased business investment of $47 billion.

As I indicated in my previous correspondence, we are merging these two sales taxes because it will strengthen our economy. Doing so will reduce costs for Ontario businesses - allowing them to make investments that will enable them to become more competitive and hire or retain more workers. In addition, we are cutting corporate taxes and personal income taxes for 93 per cent of all Ontario taxpayers.

To learn more about the tax cuts and rebates that will help you and your family through the transition, please visit www.ontario.ca/taxchange.

I hope you find this information useful. Please accept my best wishes.

Dalton McGuinty
Premier of Ontario

Sweet, will send the "iron clad" contract to McGuilty first. Let him read it over and make sure it gives me the ability to rob consumers blind with infinite rate increases :)

Back in the early 90's, the GST and NAFTA were introduced (by the Conservatives) and the great majority decided that it was the end of Canada as we knew it and that massive unemployment was the ONLY thing that could result. The Liberals ran a HUGE campaign based upon how bad these two things were and the promise to get rid of both as soon as they were elected. They won in a landslide.

Shortly after that election victory, the Fiberals recanted on their promises to kill both controversial moves and left them in place. Why? Because they quickly realized that both were great moves for the country and more importantly the economy. They rode the wave of economic growth generated by the GST and NAFTA to 14 years in power.

That same Conservative party (this is an idea from the federal level and is currently the way taxes are collected in all but 2 provinces) with the foresight to understand what the country needed are suggesting this to us as a means to protect the economy and jobs. Stephen Harper IS an economist and although not the media darling that most politicians are is someone who I believe is better suited to understand what the country needs economically than anybody else. I think the reason that there is not a lot of public interest in this is because most politicians understand it to be a good long-term strategy for a struggling Ontario and Canada as a whole.

Eerily, the growing discomfort with the HST is reminding me of the unfounded and frankly uneducated panic over a change that most didn't understand back in the 90's.

Those who neglect to study history are condemned to repeat it.

Just thought I would comment on what mux was saying

Okay so when the price of fuel goes up 8% when the HST is added are we all going to get kick backs from the oil companies? or is gas going to go down....some how I doubt it.
Last year I spent $8200.00 on fuel
ADD 8% and I just paid another 656 dollars on the same fuel with 2 taxes.
They are robbing all of us :!: :!:
When are they (the government) going to be accountable :?: :?:

When the GST came in the government dropped the 13% (I think) manufacturing tax. That meant that everything was going to fall 13% and the GST was only 7% so the taxpayer had a net gain of 6% on all purchases, as told to us by our politicians. The only drop that was visible to the consumer was car prices, because the Manufacturing tax was on the invoice so they had to drop it from there. I have talked to many, many people and they don't have a clue on the HST, When you start to tell them about the golf club membership and the health club and gas and hydro being hit with another 5% they all look at you stunned. I know that I went through last years receipts and adding 5% to them adds $2375 in taxes. OUCH!! :(
I wrote to the Premier and griped and got that form letter back thanking me for my interest. And a follow up one telling me how good this is going to be for Ontario. I wrote back and asked where am I going to get the extra 2400 bucks to maintain the lifestyle that I worked so hard to achieve but he hasn't answered me yet.
BUT...they are holding hearings on the HST this Thursday at Queens Park and we are all invited. It IS time for a revolt but how do you start?
