I was out at Thompsons on Sunday and noticed some guys anchoring while jigging what is the best type anchor for a 17 Ft Aluminum with 25 HP motor.

I would get a danforth anchor. They work well on most bottom types.

I can highly recomend a Richter Anchor as I have used one for the past 6 years, they are easy to store in your boat and they hold on any type of bottom. They are designed to remove easily out of rocks or when hung up on bottom - you just drive back over the anchor to release. I figure a 18lb would be good for your size of boat.

Both gentlemen have some good ideas about what to look for in anchor design for the Bay of Quinte. Sand, mud a bit of rock or gravel, weeds. The Dansforth would be the easiest and most practical to find in the area.

Please keep in mind, that if you are looking to use this in other types of bottoms, like say a lake or area with a lot of woody debris, that you would want to avoid having a design that would hang up too much. Rivers or areas with heavy current are yet another unique concern, with rivers like the Fraser using a different and heavier design if one really wants to get serious. Just another two cents.

It is good that you are doing a bit of digging into this area as they can make a world of difference.

Regards
Donald Stokes

What Sheldon said. I picked up one of these 3 years ago and haven't been disappointed one bit. Great anchor.

West marine has both danforth and richters available and bass pro has the richter. I'm sure some of the smaller places might too.

If you plan on dropping into a pack of boats you might want to consider a weight anchor over a lighter one that has to be set. If you have to run out a couple hundred feet of rode or more to set the anchor you might not be too popular.
