I know everyone is concerned with their fishing budgets. THere are some lesser name reels that I've come across.

There's one in Kingston that retails for aboput $100.00.

I also found a Shakespeare mechanical line counter reel at Wal-Marts in watertown NY for $39.95 (US) Not a bad way to start off .

Spend the extra and get a Daiwa. It's worth it in the long run.

Buy a Shimano 1500 LC.

I have a Daiwa but these are much nicer and only $165.00 at LeBaron.

If you use a level wind reel you can measure the line off the reel in one pass off the wachamacallit and then count the # off passes X that measure of line to get the distance you want and put your money into a nicer reel without a counter.

Hey guys, you can address this matter of counting out line easily without investing in expensive line counter reels. I use a copolymer mono line on my baitcasters, with a flourocarbon leader. I mark the line in 25 ft. increments after 100 ft. (including leader) with a Sharpee (Permanent black marker). You'll almost always let out at least 100 ft. of line when trolling. The kids think it's great. They get to play fish in the yard, and just run with the line to the end of my 25ft. measuring tape, then lay the line down, I mark it and they peel off the next section. Takes less then 5 min. per reel, and the marks last at least a few outings. As you let the line out, just count the marks (1 mark equals 25ft.) and add 100. Hey, I'll do anything to save a buck (means more lures for the box), and the line seems unaffected. At least I haven't had a big walleye break off yet. It's just a little tricky when night fishing. Cheers,

Why not try one of the Rebel line counters you clamp on your rod. They are less than $20 and can be used with any reel.

That's what I have now and it kept on popping off. Almost fell in the water a few times. I also had to mount it quite a ways from the reel as my trolling rod is quite thick and trying to read the darned thing two feet up on the rod was a pain. The other irritating feature is that you have to put the line on or under the wheel depending if you're counting line in or out. One of my friends just bought one from Shakespeare that looked like it would work pretty good but he hasn't tried it yet. LeB's didn't have them so I'll have to get him to pick one up for me if it works any good. I think he said he bought it in Kingston. I like my reel which is a Daiwa Sealine SLI but I would like the line counting feature.

how's this idea,I us a combination of Polliwogg's and Weedman's set-up,2 to 4 identical reels,no counters, spooled with line that's the same diameter,25ft. tape, mark off 100ft,walk you line out to the 100ft. mark, drop it there, return to your rod and start reeling with tension, counting each pass till you reach your rod tip. Presto, you now know how many passes out till 100ft,double your passes for 200ft. For me its 24p for 200,18 for 150,12 for 100, 5 for 50. Line counters are not reliable enough for me,different diameters of line, spool depth of line, all change the numbers and it save's money for lures, like I need more. Good Luck!

Marking your line and counting passes are very good ideas and I have done all these when I was watching my budget. The drawback to counting line passes is that you actually have to watch the real the whole time and not get sidetracked. If you are trying to set multiple lines at a time you can't do it. Who mentioned the Shimano line counter. If that is the old style one they have no clicker for putting tension on the line when letting out and they count line in metres. If that is the new model Shimano just came out with ,at that price, I want to know so I can buy one to try it.

Hey Targa2,

this is the one at LeBaron's for $165

Looking at the specs, this one doesn't have the clicker. You would have to get the BM50 which I don't see listed in the LeB's catalog.

That new Shimano is a nice reel but I can buy 2 Daiwas for $329. Ive had some of my Daiwas for 10 years and not one screwup. You don't need a Rolls Royce to get you to work and back if a Sunfire will do.
