Quinte Fishing

Hey guys,

I am just prepping up for the hard water season and was wondering what line you guys use when ice fishing the bay? Last couple of years I was using braided line, for the sensitivity, but it ices up real bad. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this subject.

The last 2 years I've been using Fireline Micro Ice Crystal. It works pretty good and doesn't seem to ice up as bad as braid.

I use the cheap cajun red ice line. I have never had a break off and what i love about is the high visibility with the bright red.

Fireline Micro Ice for deep water, I love it for fishin whitties/lakers on Simcoe.

I also like floro-carbon for shallow water eyes and pike.

I find that rope works really well and you don't have to worry about line break. Make sure it's good and thick! I usually go with the yellow kind, something about it drives the fish nuts! I was out yesterday on the bay of quinte ice was a little thin so I stuck in close to shore, but there was a really good 1/4 inch at least, which in my eyes is good enough. Hey Zara,

Are you serious about the rope? I would think that it would be too visible. What kind of knot do you use? Make's sense though and would totally save me money and hopefully would not have to re-spool as often. If you don't mind me asking where would I pick some up and is there a certain kind or brand? Thanks for the information and I will have to look into it!

Hey guys.. Just my 2 cents here. I've been fishing the bay for over 25 yrs and guided for 5yrs and all I've ever used was 8lb Trilene XL . I also use a small black clasp on the end to attach my lures with ease. Be sure it has a quality ball bearing with it or you will get major line twist with all the jigging. The big secret is having a quality reel that has a good drag system ! Once again just my 2 cents im sure there is better out there but this works for me. Best of luck and stay safe. Jason
