Quinte Fishing

Hey guys,

I have to buy a number of casting reels, one of which is for a slop rod. I have read that Abu Garcia REVO's are pretty durable...does anyone have any experience with Abu??? What can you tell me?

The other is Ardent...anyone own an Ardent reel out there?

I personally like the Revo's, I have a dozen or so that I've been using for 2 season's with no issues. Every winter they come apart to be cleaned and lubed, they work like the day that I bought them. My only beef with them is they don't have a model with a flippin switch.

I like Shimano as well but I can't justify double the price for a comparable product. I can't speak for Ardent never used one or know of anyone who uses them.

Shane I now have 3 Revos STXs, Revo Elite Auroa, and 2 Revo Premiers and they are amaing reels they last as long has you take care of them them as along with my daiwas. I havent read anything or heard any bad on the ardent reels at all other then on a few of the other fourms that im on just do a lil research before you buy one shane.

I have an Ardent xs 1000 and love it.

I did a casting test with a buddy using a Quantum energy and it kicked it's butt in casting distance...not that distance matters.

I will add...I did tear the gears out of it late this year. Emailed the company and within a couple of hours, had the information to fix for free with a big apology.

I was having a bad day when it happened; trolling motor died, trim problems etc so think it was my bad karma that day.

I'd buy another for sure....

Sounds like the Abu reels are a good choice. To be honest, I have never used anything with a flippin' switch. Are they as useful as they sound??

I have big paws and, as long as I can palm the reel, I can flip & engage the reel with one hand...as long as the reel has a star drag handle.

How important are flippin switches?

Hey Shaner I know I sent you a PM about this but it makes flipping much easier. The Shimano Castasic reel has the flipping switch and allows you to engage the drag right away with one hand. Also if you like to walleye fish and bottom bounce you can use this reel for that technique as well with the same line that on the reel (even though flipping line is usually heavier 30 - 80 lbs test braid). If your pitching off a drop or bottom bouncing uneven bottom the flipping switch allows you drop the line much easier and engage the drag once again with one hand.

The flipping switch on the castaic is different then anyother flipping switch though. Its not seperate from the thumb bar like the others so you wont have the problems with springs going in them. So always keep in mind about the castaic, and then look at the others an you will see the diffence and prefromance differences.

Can't beat the new Shimano Curado's for casting reels, or the Castaic for a flipping reel.
