Pete and I were fishing Picton Bay on Monday morning. We had our board drop back just like any other time a walleye has been attached. It was a reef runner 900 , that was 150 ft off the board with no snap weight. We were in 32-35 feet of water at the time and the board was in the same. Pete grabbed the rod and massive weight but the board hung out to the side. I slowed the motor all the way down as far as it could go. Probably about .7 mph It didn't budge. I watched Pete hold the rod and it looked and acted like it was hung on bottom. Keep in mind this lure will only run 18ft max. After 20 seconds or so Pete handed the rod to me and asked me to feel it. I did, felt like it was hung, no head shakes, nothing. At this point I figured it had to be hung on something but looking back I should have known better. I held the rod another 15 seconds and figured id try to break it free so I did the old tighten down and then free spool it and it popped free. I reeled the lure in and found no bent hooks, the lure was clean, no major puncture wounds. We scratched our heads on this one all day. It wasnt ice. Keep in mind that I have landed many of fish on my rods and much the same way as you know your rods, i know mine. Whatever was on there I couldn't move. If it were a fish it had to be 20+ lbs minimum. Was it a musky like some have suggested? Anyone have any explanations?

where you near the cement plant "run" for the ships?

lots fall off those ships in the harbour...

could have wrapped around some rebar or something of the like.

even the biggest muskie or sturgeon would have moved.

I was thinking if it were rebar or something i wouldnt have gotten my lure back with out a bent hook. Im not a musky guy however i have landed a few. I was told that in this cold water they can be lethargic and just hang onto a bait.

I had a similar experience the last time I was out! The guy with me picked the rod and said he couldn't "move" the fish!! I told him to tighten up the drag. He said he did! Unfortunatly I was sooo hung over ...it took me too long to get to him to help. It pulled the hooks..... I kind of wondered about a dormant laker ?????
We were fishing deep in 50 fow.

Just a thought but it could have been a old fishing net. I've seen and heard of lots of people getting caught up in old abandon fishing nets from either commercial fishermen or poachers. Just a theory to think about. Jason

Maybe it was a huge channel cat...... they can be dam tough to gert off the bottom!! I watched my grandpa back a few years bring in one that was over 30 lbs and it took him at least 20 mins to budge it off the bottom!!!!

I had a similar experience this fall in mid October, but had "it" on longer.

Board dropped back like a fish. We were able to retrieve about 50 - 60' of line but with no headshakes, just slow steady retrieve. Then it stopped and would not budge. I eventually tightened down the drag and pulled thinking I would break the line. It popped lose and when I retrieved it, all was intact. Wierd. I figured either a big channel cat, or something like a good size branch that was suspended then hung up. I guess we'll never know. I was just off the cement plant in 35 fow.

C'mon....

Don't you guys know? It's the "QuinteNess Monster" ...it eats Reef Runner 900's and then spits them out when it's done. LOL.

Seriously, it's likely a snagged fish, Channel Cat, Walleye or Sheephead, the bait likely just pulls out...Explains why the bait is entact and why you couldn't move it at all.

My 2 cents.

Cheers, Hodgey
