How far up the line should one rig a snap weight? Does anyone know of any shop that sells the rig in southern ontario, or do you have to order from MI?

According to 'Precison Trolling' there are two schools of snap weight thoughts.

50/50 - lure / 50 ' line / snap weight / 50 ' of line

20 Rule - lure / 20 ' of line / snap weight This will cause the lure to go down and extra 1/3 of the original diving depths.

A one ounce bell sinker (or more as required) and an elastic band make a simple and cost effective solution to this otherwise costly exercise in getting the lure down. Same thing as the snap weights

Hope this helps.

I've got other sites that expound cheaper snap weights, but the elastic band is the cheapest. Another site I have pooh-poohs the snap weight system and have a long and involved series of geometric formulas that you can figure out exactly how deep your lure is.

Best Idea - Get ' Precision Trolling'

Hey Tech

They have them at Lebaron's ( Mississauga ) , but you won't find them on the shelve , they are behind the counter, right near where all the Rapalas are.
I run mine about 3-4 feet up from the lure, it's almost a learn as you go thing. Try different weights at different lengths , but they do work.

good luck

Hey Tech,

At least in the Ottawa Area you can buy/order the Offshore Snap Weights from Le Barons. I would expect there has to be some store in TO or along Lake Erie that sells them as well but I am unfamiliar with them.

In terms of distance I like to use a rod length. The main reason is that when bringing in the fish you don't have to take the snap weight off to net the fish.

Cheers,

Mike

Great tips guys thanks! I have a couple rigs of my own I'm dying to try too. First I'll try some tried and true methods otherwise...it's experimental time...

...if a rod's length is what you prefer I would suggest the use of a 3-way swivel and a snap to attach the weight .
