Cherpe,
I was fishing Deseronto on Sunday. There were about 20 people fishing in the general area in either portable huts or out in the open. No one is heading out from the boat launch because the ice from there looks very unstable. Most (including myself) were parking at the Mohawk landing historic site (just a little west of the boat launch) and walking out from there. The ice averages about 4 inches of perfect black ice with almost no snow on it. Do NOT take your ATV out. The ice is nice and solid for walking but not thick enough for a machine. There was nearly an inch difference between the ice thickness at the two holes I cut so it's just not worth taking a chance on crossing a thin spot with your machine.
As a side note, we caught nothing. That being said, I overhead one fellow saying that the bite from the night before was pretty decent. Personally, my next trip will be to Point St.Anne. I know 4 inches is safe according to the math but I still prefer to drill a little longer.
